Amar Singh Chamkila is the name that is doing rounds all over the internet. The iconic Punjabi singer, who is renowned for being 'Elvis Presley of Punjab', is now becoming a known face across India. The credit goes to the critically-acclaimed filmmaker, Imtiaz Ali, who has made Amar Singh Chamkila's biopic. The much-awaited film will be available on Netflix from April 12, 2024 onwards. While Diljit Dosanjh plays 'Amar Singh Chamkila', Parineeti Chopra portrays the role of Chamkila's second wife, Amarjot Kaur, in the biographical drama.
Amar Singh Chamkila was born on July 21, 1960, into a Dalit Sikh family in a small village named Dungri near Ludhiana, Punjab. When he was young, he aspired to become an electrician, but when he grew up, he found a decent job at a cloth mill. However, at the age of 18, he tried his luck in singing as he showcased his talent to Surinder Shinda, who gave him the chance to be his protege.

In the following years, Amar Singh Chamkila also worked with legendary Punjabi folk singers like Kuldeep Singh Kang and Mohammad Sadiq. After gaining enough experience, he started singing with famous Punjabi vocalist, Surinder Sonia. However, it was his partnership with Amarjot Kaur that took his career to an unprecedented height. Amarjot and Chamkila not only dominated the live show space but also became one of the most successful singing duos in the history of Punjabi music.
Amarjot Kaur was the first female vocalist of Amar Singh Chamkila's band, and the moment they made their debut on the stage, people instantly fell in love with their chemistry. From Amar Singh Chamkila's lyrics and energy to Amarjot's exceptional control on her pitch, it looked like they were destined to become the Punjabi music industry's hit duo. For the unversed, it was Kuldeep Manak, who told Amarjot to contact Amar Singh Chamkila, and she deserved the credit for assembling the iconic pair.
According to several reports, Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur's popularity crossed all limits as they did around 366 live shows across the country in a span of 365 days. At a time when other Punjabi singers were struggling to pen catchy lyrics, Amarjot and Chamkila leveraged the opportunity and dominated the Punjabi music industry. Not only this, there were times when Chamkila and Amarjot would do two to three live shows in a single day, such was the level of their popularity.

When Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur were doing live shows together, they formed a bond that went beyond their professional commitments. The two fell in love, and it was their shared passion for Punjabi folk music that played Cupid for them. While Amarjot was unmarried, Chamkila was already married to his first wife, Gurmail Kaur. Not only this, he and Gurmail were parents to two daughters, Amandeep Kaur and Kamaldeep Kaur.

Despite knowing about Amar Singh Chamkila's first wife and their daughters, Amarjot Kaur couldn't stop herself from falling in love with him. As per a report in The Statesman, Chamkila tied the knot with Amarjot without giving divorce to his first wife, Gurmail Kaur. However, in the later years, he separated from Gurmail and lived with his second wife, Amarjot. The couple also welcomed a son and named him Jaiman Chamkila.
Due to their dominance in the Punjabi music industry, several people targeted Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur's memorable duo. As a result, on March 9, 1988, they were shot dead by a group of militants before their live performance in Punjab's Mehsampur. It was a heartbreaking moment for the Punjabi music industry and the end of one of the greatest pairings ever.
