Waheeda Rehman is one of the most notable names in the world of cinema, and the diva’s prolific career is the living proof of the kind of evergreen work that she has done. Hailed especially for her breathtaking looks and incomparable acting mettle, Waheeda has been a part of some of the most classic films, such as Guide, Pyaasa, Kagaz Ke Phool, Chaudvin Ka Chand, Reshma Aur Shera, among many others. Over her years of glorious film career, Waheeda has bagged some iconic awards and accolades, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, as well as countless Filmfare and National Awards. And now, the living legend is set to add another feather to her cap of achievements.
According to the recent announcement made by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, legendary actress, Waheeda Rehman will be presented with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award Lifetime Achievement Award this year, in recognition for the precious and irreplaceable contributions she has made in the world of Indian cinema. For the unversed, back in 2022, this award was presented to Asha Parekh, who has also been a befitting contemporary actress to Waheeda Rehman. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Anurag Thakur announced the same in a long note. An excerpt of the same can be read as:
“I feel an immense sense of happiness and honour in announcing that Waheeda Rehman ji is being bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award this year for her stellar contribution to Indian Cinema.”
Right after the announcement of her being honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award was made, the legendary diva, in an interaction with India Today, reacted to the same and expressed her feelings. She mentioned her gratitude for her work being recognised and said:
"I am so happy that people ultimately recognised my work. I feel one should keep working with dedication and honesty, then you do get your regards. I got to know about it this morning. I have to go to the airport to catch a flight, so I don't know how I am going to celebrate. My family and I are very happy, that is all."
Born in 1938, Waheeda belonged to a Deccani Muslim family in the state of Tamil Nadu, and was the youngest among her other 3 sisters. Along with her sisters, she was duly trained in the art of Bharatnatyam. However, Waheeda’s scope of the dream was not even an inch closer to cinema, as she always wanted to become a doctor. However, post her father’s early death and subsequently, her mother also falling ill, Waheeda had to abandon her dreams and step into the glamour world. While her initial Tamil film projects did not give her massive success, it was only after she started collaborating with Dev Anand and Guru Dutt that her career flourished magnanimously.
In a previous interview with Radio Nasha, Waheeda Rehman opened up on an unknown anecdote from the shooting of her film, Solva Saal, where, in a particular scene, her character’s clothes were soaking wet and she was supposed to change them. However, Waheeda mentioned that she did not like the kind of clothes she was given, since they were too revealing, she chose to wear an outfit that made her comfortable, and came out. Sharing how it angered the filmmaker, to the extent that he called for a pack up of the shoot, Waheeda mentioned:
“I was given a costume that I did not want to wear. The director said if you are not comfortable then don’t wear it but when you come on the set, you should be happy. So when I came on the set, I wore what made me comfortable. The director was furious. He said this your second or third movie, and it will be your last one because you have too many conditions. The director was so angry that he packed up for the day.”
