On July 31 2009, Imtiaz Ali had released his fourth film in theatres after the giant success of Jab We Met for which he had won the Filmfare award for the Best Director. Expectations were high with his film, Love Aaj Kal and the stage was set by the hit chart-buster songs like Aahun Aahun, Twist, and Ye Dooriyan for the release of the film. So, when the film was released in theatres, it simply blew away everyone’s mind and went on to engrave its name as one of the most interesting and pure love stories ever in Bollywood’s rich history. The chemistry of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone was simply mesmerising and the dialogues are the reason why we couldn’t get over from their respective characters even to this very day. People loved the story, concept, acting of lead actors, songs, and the direction of Imtiaz Ali. Now, after all these years, the director is back to create that magic again on the big screen. Luckily and brilliantly, he picked Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, the rumoured couple whose dating rumours never fail to make it to the headlines. There’s no argument to the beautiful truth that both of them look extremely cute and adorable with each other. That’s the reason why there was a huge buzz before the trailer release of Love Aaj Kal. But the reaction, memes, and trolls on the internet tell a completely different story. As fans are disappointed with the trailer and are constantly comparing it with the original film. Another reason for these strong comparisons is the fact that Sara Ali Khan’s father, Saif Ali Khan was in the original film and it was one of the best performances of his career.
So, with all the comparisons going on between the two films, Sara Ali Khan talked about her views on the same in an interview with the Mid-Day. She said, “I wasn’t looking at replicating the original film. I said yes to the film without reading the script. I had asked Imtiaz sir why we weren’t calling it Love Aaj Kal 2, he explained that the concept is relevant and timeless. The actress also urged people not to compare this film with the 2009 film and sends out a message for everyone. She said, “It’s daunting to be here. I respect every opinion that comes my way. But I hope people don’t compare it with the 2009 film. We are in the movies and ready to take risks. I am not here to please the whole world. So, I go with what feels right to me.”
In the same interview, Sara Ali Khan also talked about the reason why she took this film and why this film is going to bring womanhood in a never-before-seen angle. She said, “Zoe (Sara’s Character in the film) represents the financial and emotional independence of women. In the trailer, she walks up to her love interest and questions him why they aren’t sleeping together. Women talking about sex have become important because you are bringing the focus on their desires.”
Sara Ali Khan also revealed that she’s excited to see the reaction of the audience when they’ll see her chemistry with Kartik Aaryan for the first time. Because even before they signed this film, everyone was talking about them all over the internet. On this, she said, “Our chemistry was [talked about] even before we signed the film. We hope that once people see us in the film, there’s pride waiting for us on the other side.”
It’s going to be interesting to see whether the audience is still eager to see Love Aaj Kal or not. However, comparisons are going there and not just about the plot but in-between Saif and Kartik and Sara and Deepika. The 2009 film was filled with outstanding dialogues that we use even to this date for our loved ones. For instance, Saif’s answer to Rishi Kapoor’s character, 'Veer' when he was telling him "Pyaar ik waar hi haunda hain, raaje" And he had replied saying "Mujhe kum se kum 15 baar ho chuka hai paaji". So, it’s tough to beat the chemistry of Deepika and Saif but if there’s any couple out there, who can relish this challenge then undoubtedly, it is Sara and Kartik.
