Teary-Eyed Sania Mirza Bursts Out Crying During Her Speech As She Bids Adieu To Grand Slam Career

Indian tennis sensation, Sania Mirza is regarded as one of the most influential athletes in India. A few days back, Sania announced her retirement and revealed that she is all set to play her last Australian open. During her final match with Rohan Bopanna, Sania gave an emotional speech and couldn’t hold back her tears.

As she began talking, Sania paused for a moment and burst out crying. It was indeed an emotional moment for all her fans present in the stadium, who cheered the loudest for the legend. Sania, who began her Grand Slam career at the Australian Open in 2005, recalled her initial years and said:

“I’m still gonna play a couple more tournaments but my journey of my professional career started in Melbourne. It started in Melbourne in 2005 when I played Serena Williams in the third round here as an 18 year old.”

Sania bagged her first Grand Slam title in 2009 when she won the mixed doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi. Revealing how she couldn’t think of a better arena to finish her career, Sania thanked everyone for making her feel at home and continued:

“I’ve had the privilege to come back here again and again and win some tournaments here and play some great final amongst you all, and it’s Rod Laver Arena has really been special in my life. And I couldn’t think of a better arena to finish my career at in a Grand Slam. So thank you so much for making me feel at home here.”

Sania Mirza began playing at the age of six and was initially trained by her father, Imran Mirza. Sania is the first Indian woman to bag a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title. In a career of 20 years, Sania Mirza won 6 Grand Slam titles. The ace tennis player became the first Indian woman to achieve the world number 1 ranking in the doubles category.

On January 13, 2023, Sania Mirza announced her retirement from Tennis. Sharing an array of pictures, Sania penned her emotions on her 30-year-long time in the game. Penning gratitude towards her coach, parents, friends and fans, Sania revealed the reason behind taking retirement and shared that since her son, Izhaan is growing up, he needs more of her time.

Sania Mirza will be retiring from professional tennis at Dubai Tennis Championships in February 2023.
