An age gap of 22 years and 51 years of married life together! These numbers could not be of any ordinary couple, right? Yes, we are talking about Bollywood’s legendary couple, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu. These two veteran celebrities from the Hindi film industry have proved that age is just a number when love is involved. Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu are in the headlines these days, owing to Dilip saab’s health. From the past few days, reports have been floating around that his health has been deteriorating constantly and in fact, he has lost his ability to recognise people. Few reports even suggested that Dilip Kumar is now unable to recognise even his wife, Saira Banu.
But Saira ji has come out in the open and rubbished all such reports. She told a media house that Dilip saab is doing fine and was quoted as saying, “He is alright. He has come back from the hospital and is recuperating at home as he had two bouts of pneumonia. He is with his doctor and nursing staff. He is getting better by God's grace.”
On being asked if the 95-year-old actor is able to recognise people around him, Saira ji replied, “Who says that? I would not give that any cognizant at all. All is well, all is fine and nothing of this sort”. Well, that’s such a relief, isn’t it? We do not want to lose one of Bollywood’s greatest showmen ever.
Last year, when Saira ji celebrated her 74th birthday on August 23, 2017, she spoke in lengths about Dilip saab and prayed for his speedy recovery. She said, “I just want God to make Dilip Saab completely fit again. I wish he’d get well, and he should always get the love that he’s getting right now. That’s my only wish for this year”. She further added, “It’s a fact that ever since I became an actress, and in fact, even before that, I just wanted to be Dilip saab's wife. Material gifts are good, and yes, they make one happy. But, the gift of love is the biggest gift one could ever get. And I’m lucky that I have got that love from him”.
In an earlier interview, Saira ji revealed that she is still head-over-heels in love with him and was quoted as saying, “I am still head over heels in love with my Kohinoor, Yousuf Sahab, the way I was when I first felt attracted to him as a 12-year-old. Ours has been as good and enduring a marriage as so many marriages that have survived the ups and downs for four decades. No marriage is perfect. How can it be, when as human beings we are not perfect? It is mutual love, respect and adoration that keep a marriage ticking”.
Dilip saab and Saira ji’s love story is very interesting. In an interview, Saira ji once confessed that she has been in love with Dilip saab since the age of 12. She had revealed, “I was not just another girl smitten by Dilip Kumar. For me, it was no castle in the air because I had given my dream the strong foundation of faith- faith in myself and faith in God”. Because Dilip Kumar was such a big star, he was constantly linked-up with many leading actresses of that generation. On this, Saira Banu later said to a media house, “I told him that I wouldn't be just another wife. I have to be the one and only wife which I was promised to be. I wouldn't take it. At the the outset of our marriage even though we both are Muslims, we had clearly promised each other that there would be no other person in our lives- neither for him, nor for me”.
Well, we really hope that this love story goes on till eternity. May God always keep Dilip Kumar healthy.
