Shahid Kapoor's movie, Kabir Singh was a hit at the box office. As per several reports, Kabir Singh was the second-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019 and Shahid's highest-grossing solo-lead release. For those who don't know, Kabir Singh was a Bollywood remake of the movie, Arjun Reddy, and it grabbed a lot of attention back then because a certain section of cine lovers tagged the movie under the label of glorified misogyny and toxic masculinity. The movie was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, whose next movie, Animal is on the verge of setting fire on the silver screens. Ahead of the release of Animal, Sandeep revealed some unheard backstory behind Kabir Singh.
Did you know that Shahid Kapoor wasn't the first choice for the movie, and even he was given the offer despite having a lot of doubts about the same? Yes! You read it right. Recently, in one of his conversations with iDream Media, Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened up about the same. He said that he was continuously getting calls from Mumbai to remake the movie, Arjun Reddy, and Ranveer Singh was the first choice for the movie. Sandeep shared that he wanted to do Kabir Singh with Ranveer Singh first. But the actor later refused to be in the film, as it was too dark for him back then. Sandeep said:
"I was continuously getting calls from Mumbai to do the remake. First, it was pitched to Ranveer Singh. I wanted to do it with him. But finally, he decided he will not do it, because it was too dark for him at that time."
Going forward in the interview, Sandeep Reddy Vanga shared that after Ranveer Singh refused to act in Kabir Singh, he offered the role to Shahid Kapoor. He further added that there were a lot of doubts about Shahid Kapoor playing the lead role in the movie because of his track record. Sandeep said that none of Shahid's solo released films crossed the mark of Rs. 100 crores at the box office, for which the filmmaker was receiving comments about choosing Shahid over Ranveer Singh. However, with his immense trust in Shahid's acting prowess, Sandeep offered him the role. Elaborating more on the same, Sandeep stated:
"Shahid’s track record was a concern; none of his solo films had done Rs 100 crore then, his highest was Rs 65 crore. They used to say Rs 55 crore, Rs 65 crore is the kind of business Telugu movies do. ‘Why are you doing it with this guy? If it was Ranveer, the box office would be higher’. But I was always sure about Shahid, he’s a fantastic actor."
Earlier, in an interview with Pinkvilla, Shahid Kapoor shared that, at first, he wasn't ready to do Kabir Singh. He said that he had never done such kind of characters and was sceptical about playing a whole different kind of character in the movie. However, it was Mira who swopped in and told Shahid to give in. Shahid shared that Mira convinced him that he had essayed the character in love stories as well as in messed-up stories, and Kabir Singh had both. Shahid shared that after hearing Mira's point of view, he got a new perspective that he was overcomplicating his thoughts which made him say no to this film. However, later he played the role in the movie, and the rest is history.
