Pepperfry co-founder, Ambareesh Murty lived his life on his own terms. On August 7, 2023, Ambareesh Murty left for the heavenly abode after succumbing from cardiac arrest. However, not many know that Ambareesh was on a Mumbai to Leh bike ride when he took his last breath in Leh. He died doing what he loved the most, and his last video was all about it.

Pepperfry co-founder, Ambareesh Murty's early life

Ambareesh Murty was an engineer, who did his Civil Engineering from Delhi College Of Engineering (1990-1994). He also did an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (1994-1996). Ambareesh's journey to the world of entrepreneurship started during his graduation as he home-tutored students of 11th and 12th standards. In the 1990s, he started Tutors' Bureau which connected talented tutors with school kids.

Ambareesh Murty started his corporate journey with Cadbury India

Ambareesh started his corporate career as a management trainee with Cadbury India in 1996. He gave five years of his life to the company and rose to the position of brand manager. He had also worked with ICICI Prudential AMC and as a brand leader at Levi Strauss India.

Ambareesh Murty's personal experience made him create a leading furniture e-store, Pepperfry

Ambareesh Murty had been a self-driven man with the hunger to try everything. In the first 20 years of his life, Ambareesh had shifted seven houses with his family as his mother was a Government employee and her job involved a lot of transfers. In an interaction with YourStory, Ambareesh revealed that their rented houses became special because of one thing. He was quoted as saying:

"What we did inside the house made them special. There was a time when we wouldn't have a bed in a bedroom. It would be a multi-functional room where the family would sit together and discuss a bunch of things while sitting on the floor or a cotton mattress. But that nook was very valuable for us."

Ambareesh further added that the same pattern continued after he got married. He shifted another seven houses with his wife. In the same interview, Ambareesh revealed that the only thing he could buy from Rs. 15,000 cash, which they received as a gift was a bookshelf. This triggered the idea of creating a company, where a person can buy any piece of furniture which they want.

The birth of Ambareesh's famous store, Pepperfry

Ambareesh Murty and his friend, Ashish Shah came up with the idea of the online home and furniture marketplace, Pepperfry with Ashish Shah in 2012. Pepperfry has grown drastically over the years and is one of the leading e-commerce websites, and has raised USD 200 million. 

Ambareesh was an avid bike rider

Apart from creating an amazing furniture brand under budget, Ambareesh craved adventure. He was an avid biker, trekker and a man who once said that he would go for a ride every 3-4 months, and without it, he would get 'withdrawal symptoms'. Not many know that in the midst of pandemic, Ambareesh Murty rode from Mumbai to Ladakh on his Royal Enfield. His Mumbai office is decked up with trekking ropes and photographs of his countless adventures.

Ambareesh Murty's net worth

Ambareesh Murty was an inspiration to many. He proved that age is just a number if you want to achieve anything in life. His total net worth is USD 100 Million, which converted in INR is around Rs. 800 crores. His company, Pepperfry was valued at USD 460 million in November 2021. 

At the age of 51, Ambareesh Murty left for the heavenly abode on August 7, 2023. He was on a bike ride from Mumbai to Leh. In his last post, Ambareesh summed up his life and love for adventure and rides in one beautiful line, 'I ride, therefore I am.
