The tiny umbrella-shaped ornaments that hang through a dulhan’s chooda, have become the hottest trend now. Popular celebrities, from Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif to Hansika Motwani and Neha Kakkar, everyone has played with the design of their kaleeras on their D-Day to bring out the true personality they hold.

It was a sunny day in December 2021 when the media got exclusive footage of Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal’s hush-hush wedding in Rajasthan. It was an emotional moment for her millions of fans to see the diva turned into a beautiful Punjabi dulhan. Dressed in a red Sabyasachi lehenga, she gave tough competition to the desi brides.
However, it was her customised kaleera from the designer, Mrinalini Chandra, which took our hearts. She wore gold bespoke bird charms kaleera, which were engraved with unique messages from Katrina herself. Each bangle had up to 6-7 messenger doves. Moreover, the kaleera contained words from the Bible and a sign of ‘OM’.
Everyone has seen Priyanka Chopra Jonas as a bride on the silver screen many times. Hence, it was important for her to create a mesmerising yet unique look for her D-Day. In 2018, she married the American singer, Nick Jonas, following Hindu and Christian rituals.
At her wedding at Umaid Bhavan, she looked breathtakingly gorgeous in a sindoori red Sabyasachi lehenga. She had opted for a love story kaleera, engraved with important moments of her life. From a symbol of Greece where Nick proposed to her to a cross and trishul from both their religions, the designer, Mrinalini Chandra had brought every detail to reality with her designed kaleeras.
Varun Dhawan’s fashion designer wife, Natasha Dalal, had opted for an off-beat silver kaleera. They tied the knot in a dreamy wedding in 2021. She ditched the red chooda and wore a beautiful milky white chooda for a fresh look.
Dressed in a pale gold heavily embellished lehenga by the label, Anita Dongre, and clad in minimalistic green emerald diamond jewellery, Natasha looked like a dream. Moreover, the dome-shaped star-dust accessorises looked fabulous on her. It was designed by none other than Mrinalini Chandra.
Snippets from Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s destination wedding in Italy are still doing rounds on the internet. A typical Konkani marriage followed by a Sindhi-style vivah melted our hearts. On her big day, Deepika wore a gold kanjeevaram saree, picked from the shelves of designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
However, her dainty oversized kaleera are worth a mention. The diva styled her red chooda with gold jhoomar style kaleera and looked ravishing.
Sonam Kapoor took the sath pheras with businessman, Anand Ahuja in a star-studded wedding. She opted for an exquisite pair of customised kaleere and paired it with pretty floral and traditional kaleere along with it. The designs also included peacock shapes, as her lehenga also had the same prints. It was carefully designed by Mrinalini Chandra.
Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor’s wedding news came as a pleasant surprise to everyone. She turned into a pretty bride in a white Sabyasachi saree. Yet, it was her dainty and delicate kaleere by Mrinalini Chandra that won our hearts.
In her wedding pictures, you can spot the designs of the bespoke kaleera that she donned. From clouds, stars and her hubby, Ranbir Kapoor’s favourite number 8, it had a touch of all the personal details in it. Elaborating the design to Pinkvilla, the designer, Mrinali had said:
“The idea of bespoke is that, I truly feel that it is such a personal thing and kaleeras can have only the thing you want. It's very personal. Sometimes there are messages that I will make the bride write or make the husband write for the bride. And the bride gets to see it at the wedding.”
For Kajal Aggarwal and Gautam Kitchlu, it was an intimate wedding during the lockdown. She stole the show in a set of extravagant kaleera, designed by Mrinalini Chandra. The gold umbrella-shaped ornament also featured pearls at the end. It was basically designed around the theme ‘lockdown love story’. In addition, Kajal donned a red Anamika Khanna bridal lehenga, featuring Kashmiri resham work, and looked ravishing.
Sheetal Thakur and the Mirzapur fame, Vikrant Massey got hitched in 2022. During her chooda ceremony, Sheetal turned into a beautiful Himachali bride. Dressed in a traditional red salwar-suit, she wore a red chooda and a gold nath. Though she looked flawless in her no-makeup look, it was her white shell-adorned kaleera which caught our attention the most.
Neha Kakkar fell in love with a budding singer, Rohanpreet Singh and got married to him in an Anand Karaj in 2020. For the big day, she wore a pale pink Sabyasachi Mukherjee lehenga and looked pretty. Her palanquin-shaped kaleera were adorned with pearls and stonework. They are also known as raja rani doli wale kaleere.
Designer, Arpita Mehta took the plunge with designer, Kunal Rawat in August 2022. Taking the best fashion foot forward on her special day, Arpita Mehta dazzled in an ivory lehenga, which was adorned with mirrorwork all over it. She opted for a baby pink chooda and dainty kaleera designed by Mrinalini Chandra. Her kaleera designs featured shapes of evil eyes, hearts, birds and banyan trees.
