Not all love stories are meant to reach fulfilment by a happy union. There are unfortunately, a few stories of love which do not find their happy ending with a union, but instead with a respectful and comfortable distance between the two persons involved. Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan’s love story is a perfect example of this statement. The duo, who used to create a whirlwind with their unbeatable chemistry and romance, ended up living different lives from one another, each within their happy space. Let us look back on the timeline of their love story.
To begin with, let us tell you that Hrithik and Sussanne met one another in the most ordinary situations, which is a traffic signal. Both of their cars drove parallel and halted at the traffic signal, and that was when Hrithik saw a gorgeous lady, Sussanne confidently drive her vehicle. He immediately fell in love with the lady, not knowing anything at all about her. Later, Hrithik confided his feelings to his good friend, Kunal Kapoor, who eventually helped him in meeting her.

However, the first impression of Hrithik on Sussanne was slightly different. While she didn’t notice him particularly at a traffic signal, she met the former at a time when he was an emerging actor. Speaking with Neha Dhupia on her show, BFF’s With Vogue, Sussanne credited Hrithik for making her fall in love with films. She said:
“That’s when I explored, studied, went to LA and came back when I met a superstar boy who was not a superstar at that time, but was one in my eyes when I met him. But before this I didn’t realize I didn’t have any interest in the film world. But destiny gets me back that way. I love the films and the industry, but I am so happy being where I am in my profession.”
Despite having an age gap of a few years, Hrithik and Sussanne always felt that they were meant to be together. After his episode of love at first sight, the former didn’t pause from expressing his heartfelt feelings to Sussanne, and they started dating. However, after some time, Hrithik wrote a sweet letter to propose to Sussanne, expressing his feelings for her. Later on, a glimpse of his letter was shown in the show, Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, where Hrithik’s heartfelt words left everyone in awe. At one point in his letter, Hrithik had penned:
“Dear Sussanne, Hi I hope this letter finds you in the pink of hunger. I just wanted you to know that I love you very very much and that I'd want to live my entire life with you beside me. Will you? If yes than turnover, if no than eat your food."
On the other hand, Sussanne had shared another memorable anecdote about her proposal from Hrithik. Joining an earlier episode of Koffee With Karan, the diva had revealed how the actor had taken her out on a coffee date. While she was having her coffee, at the end of it, she had found something in her cup, which was a ring. Demarcating more like a promise, Hrithik then asked her if she would love to be with him forever, to which she had immediately said, ‘Yes.’
Well, Hrithik Roshan happens to be one such superstar who made his debut as a married man. While his debut performance in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai left everyone develop a crush on him, he, on the other hand, was faithfully committed to his wifey, Sussanne. For the unversed, the duo tied the knot on December 20, 2000. Since, they come from different faiths, the couple had on the contrary exchanged rings and vows in the presence of their families. In one of his previous interviews, Hrithik Roshan has described his wedding and revealed how much he wanted a classy church wedding. In his words:
“We had neither a Hindu ceremony nor a nikaah. Actually, both of us had always wanted a church wedding. I've always been inspired by them, I've seen them in films! Church weddings look so lovely, so short and sweet. We had something very close to that in Bangalore. The pool in Golden Palms is the biggest in Asia and right in its centre is something like an island. There's a bridge extending from there to the edge of the pool. The bridge acted like an aisle for us. We walked down the entire stretch, went to the centre of the pool, stood there, took our vows and signed the register. It was even better than a church wedding. It was so special, so different!”
From being soulmates to partners, Hrithik and Sussanne progressed the stages of their union quite beautifully. However, it was only in March 2006 that they got promoted as parents with the arrival of their firstborn son, Hrehaan Roshan. Later, they welcomed their secondborn son, Hridaan Roshan in May 2008, which completed their family.
After completing twelve years of marital bliss, Hrithik Roshan and Sussane Khan shocked everyone on December 13, 2012, by announcing their mutual separation. While it left many wondering what could have possibly gone wrong between the two amazing people, the duo refused to budge any further details about the reason behind their split. Taking to all his social media handles, Hrithik had penned an official statement about the same, that could be read as:
“Sussanne has decided to separate from me and end our 17-year relationship. This is a very trying time for the entire family.”

After a year of their announcement of divorce, Hrithik and Sussanne were finally granted official divorce on November 1, 2014. The couple had a mutual and peaceful divorce proceeding, with not a single document drawn up between them. In fact, they happily agreed for a joint custody for their sons, under which their children can freely be with either of the parents they want to be with.
On the matter of alimony, there were strong rumours back then that Sussanne Khan had allegedly demanded a hefty amount of Rs. 400 crores for the same. It was also stated that Hrithik had agreed to give only Rs. 380 crores in settlement to her. While the divorce lawyers from both the couple’s sides repeatedly denied such buzz, Hrithik, in one of his social media posts had rubbished it all and penned:
“Fabricated news articles. Demeaning my loved ones. Testing my patience.”
On many levels, the news of Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan’s divorce came as a shocker to their fans, who loved to see them together. In fact, many were left wondering about the real cause behind the couple choosing to call it quits. In one of her interviews with Femina, Sussanne had thrown some light on the same and mentioned that she didn’t feel it correct to remain in a false relationship. In her words:
“We had reached a stage in our lives where I decided that it's better we weren't together. It was important to be aware and not be in a false relationship."
Back in the days, there were numerous reports roaming about the probable reason behind Hrithik and Sussanne’s divorce. Considering Hrithik’s image of the handsome actor, it was easily rumoured that his frequent affairs with actresses was one of the primary reasons for the testing period in his personal life. In an interview with CNN IBN, he had reacted to all such claims and said:
“Absolutely not. Sussanne has been very very vocal about this. She has been very vocal. And I feel like laughing at people. When people get divorced, it is not always because of infidelity by the man. That is just such a small-minded assumption. So the general assumption was, 'Ah he is the superstar, he must have done something wrong. She must have caught him.' That is not the case. The reason that we decided to live separately may have been an inspiring reason, how do you know?”
It might not be surprising to note that despite Hrithik Roshan having clarifying that infidelity on his side wasn’t any reason for his divorce with Sussanne, nevertheless, frequent gossips about his affairs with leading actresses have often fuelled the gossip columns. He was first rumoured to be dating his Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon co-star, Kareena Kapoor. The fact that Hrithik was an already-married man, his family had to intervene and even asked the actress to stay away from him. However, later, Kareena rubbished all such rumours.
Apart from that, he was also linked-up with his Kites co-star, Barbara Mori. There were reports about how their on-screen chemistry had seeped onto their real life, that caused troubles in Hrithik’s marriage with Sussanne. However, not just Hrithik, but Sussanne too, shut down such buzz. After that, Hrithik had a public showdown with his Krrish co-star, Kangana Ranaut, after she made allegations of being in a relationship with him. However, Hrithik refused such claims time and again in a dignified manner.
Fast forward to now, Hrithik Roshan is in a relationship with musician and actress, Saba Azad. While the exact moment of them crossing paths for the first time isn’t known to everyone, they have, over a number of times, confirmed their relationship through PDA and public outings together.
Much like Hrithik, Sussanne Khan, too, has moved on in her life and is now dating actor, Arsalan Goni. The duo have also made their relationship official with their frequent social media posts about one another. From parties, red carpet events to vacations, Sussanne seems to be in a happy space personally with Arsalan.
Despite having moved on in their respective lives, Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan continue to remain cordial with one another!
