Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actress, Chahatt Khanna has already proved her mettle in acting through her multiple roles. However, she has been going through a tough phase while raising her kids single-handedly. For the unversed, Chahatt was married to a businessman, Bharat Narsinghani, but she filed for divorce after a few months for allegedly abusing her physically. Later, she tied the knot with Farhan Mirza in 2013 and was blessed with two daughters, Zohar and Amaira. However, Chahatt once again filed for divorce in 2018 and alleged him for terminating her pregnancies and for sexual and mental abuse. Now, Chahatt opened up about the social stigma she has to face for being a single parent to two kids.
In an interview with the ETimes, Chahatt Khanna opened up about the social stigma which greatly impacted her mental health. She mentioned that even though single mothers take huge responsibilities on their shoulders, society always looks down on them. Elaborating more on it, Chahatt took an example of the family looking out for girls for marriage prospects and revealed how the fact that she is a single mother would be a 'big issue'. Chahatt mentioned:
"Not just on the professional front, but even on the personal front, there's a lot of stigma. Any lady who is a single mother will always put in a lot more effort because of the realisation that she has more responsibilities as the only parent and nobody to rely on. Even though I have achieved something in life or that I look younger than my age, a family looking out for girls for marriage prospects will opt for an ordinary girl over me for the fact that I am a single mother. So that stigma is predominantly visible, and we can't do anything about it."
Further, Chahatt Khanna, who has been juggling between being a mother and father to her baby girls, also expressed gratitude towards the film industry. However, Chahatt mentioned people don't always agree to work with new mothers and have mixed opinions. Chahatt elaborated:
"But as compared to other professions, the stigma is comparatively less in the entertainment industry. We have evolved over the years and are progressive. Being a mother is a matter of pride for some, for a few, it is hard. People have mixed opinions about me as a single mother in this field and even about other single mothers in general too."
Now, Chahatt is all set to be seen in an upcoming movie, Yatri, and also has a film, One Way, in her pipeline. However, there was a time when she was asked to remove her kids' images as she wasn't getting any work. Talking about the obstacles a single mother faces, Chahatt stated that now, even if she wouldn't get any work, she won't remove the images. She shared:
"A lot of people told me that I shouldn't be putting up my babies' images on social media as I wouldn't get work, and in that process, I did lose out on work. But now I firmly tell them that I don't want to work with people who have regressive mindsets. I am a mother, and that's a fact. If I am asked to change or hide this fact just for work, I cannot and will never do that, come what may."
Earlier, Chahatt had taken to her Facebook account and penned a note claiming she wasn't getting any job offers for being a single mother. She also mentioned in her note that people judged her on the same fact. However, contrary to the general belief, a mother becomes more powerful when she is working for her kids.
