Are You Planning To Marry Your Co-worker?

Women today are conquering new heights daily. Most educated women today are working in the corporate world and doing well for themselves. But since you are spending most of your time in the office, is it any surprise if Cupid’s arrow points you in the direction of the next cubicle?

Say you do meet the man/ woman of your dreams and he or she happens to work in the same company. So how should you balance your career and your love life? Just follow this simple advice to ensure that your love story has a happy ending.

Keep it Simple, Silly

Most of you have probably heard of the KISS management formula. Here’s how you can apply it to your own love life. If one of your co-workers has caught your eye, then it may not be the best idea to propose to him/ her light heartedly, the way you would propose to someone in college. After all, if you dump a girlfriend/ boyfriend in college, then you can avoid that person between classes. In the corporate world, you probably won’t get a chance to do so unless you are willing to switch jobs.

Once you are certain that the co-worker is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with and that he/she feels the same way about you, it is time to inform your parents first and get the engagement formalities out of the way.

How to behave in the office

Now that you two have made the decision to be a couple, how do you traverse the potentially perilous waters of office politics? Most of your friends will probably be happy for you, but you might incite some jealousy as well. Some people might think – oh well, now that she’s going to marry him, they are going to work together as a team. If you are planning to marry your boss or someone who is higher up on the corporate ladder than you are, then your other co-workers and team members might be worried about favouritism.

So you both need to behave in a mature way together to deal with these issues, especially if you are both planning to keep working there even after marriage. Just keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Avoid any major changes in your behaviour towards each other when your colleagues are around, especially in overt displays of affection. This will only make your other colleagues and co-workers uncomfortable.
  • If you are planning to marry your manager or someone who is higher up on the corporate hierarchy than you are, then you need to be even more circumspect in your behaviour. Avoid any displays of favouritism, otherwise you could both very well end up facing a formal complaint of favouritism or nepotism. This is an ugly situation that will be very damaging towards both your careers. In fact, it might be better to avoid any impression of favouritism by ensuring that your significant other treats you the same way he treats the rest of the team, at least in the office.
