In an age where relationships crumble in the blink of an eye, some couples have proved to be an inspiration and have instilled a hope within us to find real love. They swam together against the tides and made it to the shore. While we wish for a dreamy fairy tale romance in our real life, we often forget that to sustain a relationship one has to struggle to keep it peaceful and healthy. From Bollywood, be it Dharmendra and Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu or Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan, these real-life couples have proved that commitment and compatibility are the pillars that hold a marriage together when everything else fails. And without a shadow of doubt, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan make it to the list, upholding the commitment they made to each other 46 years ago. Yes, it has been 46 years since the Sholay couple took their wedding vows in a private affair, away from the piercing glare of the media. But little do we know about how the marriage unfolded between the couple back in 1973. June 3, 1973, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri embarked on their journey of ‘happily ever after’ together and there has been no looking back since then.
On June 3, 2019, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan completed 46 years of togetherness and to commemorate the special day, the former revealed an interesting story of the unusual circumstances and their chat mangni pat vyaah in his blog post. Co-stars of several films including Chupke Chupke, Abhimaan, Bansi Birju, Sholay and many more, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan wanted to go on a trip to London to celebrate the success of their film, Zanjeer along with other friends. But Big B’s father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan told him that he could go only with Jaya after the two were married. Amitabh and Jaya were dating at that time.
Reminiscing the incident, Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog, “I lived on the 7th Road of this society.. on a rented house.. marriage had been decided among us.. nothing to be exaggerated or celebrated with any aplomb.. just the two families and.. done.. off to London, my first trip ever and hers too.. Zanjeer a success and a promise that if it did well we would all - a gang of our friends - would go on a holiday to London! Seeking or rather informing parents that we were a group of friends going to England .. who all are going came the query from Babuji .. names disclosed .. Jaya is also going with you.. you both are alone.. yes.. if you have to go marry and go.. ok.. pandit and family informed.. next day all set.. flight at night.. marriage to finish before the flight.” (Also Read: Aamir Khan's Hilarious Birthday Wish For Son, Junaid Khan Is Every Embarrassing Father Ever)
Recalling how everyone had prepped up in full swing for Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s ‘next day’ marriage as the wedding rituals had to be completed before their flight to London on the same night, Big B wrote, “I dress up in formal marriage Indian.. get into my car and want to drive to Malabar Hill where her friends lived and where the ceremony was to be done.. my driver Nagesh, pushes me out and insist he would drive me to the wedding.. the substitute for the tradition horse.. Waiting all set at Mangal, the name of the house on rent on the 7th road JVPD Scheme.. and it begins to drizzle.. neighbours rush out to me.. leave for the wedding now.. the rain is a good omen.. off I went.. wedding over in a few hours.. done.. Mr and Mrs proclaimed.. over!!”
Concluding his post by thanking everyone for the wishes, Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “Thank you all in my advance response of the wishes for the 3rd June.. I am grateful for your love and affection and remembrance.. and the Sunday overwhelms.. the love of the nearest and the dearest.. my need to pay back this overwhelming debt.. but I know I never will.. work at an early hour tomorrow so good night.. and keep by my side.”
Married for 46 years, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are blessed with two children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda. They are also proud grandparents of Navya Naveli Nanda, Agstya Nanda and Aaradhya Bachchan. Amitabh ji and Jaya ji’s doting son, Abhishek took to his social media handle to post an anniversary wish for his parents. Sharing an all-smiling picture of them, Abhishek captioned it as, “Happy Anniversary to the parentals! Love you both eternally. #46andcounting.” (Also Read: Sanjay Dutt Revisits The Memory Lane And Remembers Mother, Nargis Dutt On Her Birthday)
