Just days after his release, the 53-year-old reality star shared his first public message, giving fans a glimpse of his return to the family farm in Gallatin.
"A little more appreciation for the simple things in life….Thank you Lord for all the blessings in my life," McBee wrote on Instagram on Saturday, September 12, 2026, alongside a video showing him back on the farm.
For the McBees, the reunion carries even more weight because Tate was born while Steve was behind bars.
McBee's prison sentence stemmed from a federal crop insurance fraud case that became one of the biggest storylines surrounding the family's Bravo reality series. According to the U.S. Justice Department, McBee pleaded guilty in November 2024 to his involvement in a multimillion-dollar scheme involving federal crop insurance benefits he was not entitled to receive.
Prosecutors said McBee admitted that in 2018 he sold more than 1.2 million bushels of corn and nearly 416,000 bushels of soybeans to another party. His plea agreement required him to pay more than USD 4 million in restitution and forfeit roughly USD 3.16 million to the government.
He was ultimately sentenced to 24 months in federal prison in October 2025. McBee reported to a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, in December 2025. Before entering prison, McBee spoke about his decision to accept responsibility and suggested that he was willing to take the consequences himself. On Todd Chrisley's podcast, he described the upcoming prison time as something of a "sabbatical."
McBee also said he agreed to plead guilty in an effort to prevent the investigation from expanding to his son Steven Jr. and other people connected to the family's businesses. "At the end of the day, the buck stops with me," he said. "I take that accountability and responsibility."
The case was also woven into The McBee Dynasty, allowing viewers to see how his absence affected both his family and the family's farming operation.
McBee ended up serving less than a year of his two-year sentence. His early release was helped by his participation in a program that reduced his time behind bars, and he is expected to spend several months under home confinement followed by supervised release.
His sons were quick to celebrate his return. Steven McBee Jr. shared footage of his father reconnecting with the family, while Cole McBee posted a photo of Steve meeting his granddaughter Tate, whom he had not met before his release. He wrote:
"So blessed to have the family back together. Dad and Tate have officially got to meet now."
While he was away, his family made sure there would be something special waiting for him. His children renovated his lodge and created a home office at the family farm, essentially preparing the property for the patriarch's return. Steven Jr. also left his father a stack of books, calling reading one of the best ways to improve a person's outlook and mindset.
The family's excitement was evident in their social media posts, with Steven Jr. calling the first 24 hours together the best they had experienced in a long time. He wrote:
"Best 24 hours we’ve had in a long, long time. So many good memories to make and time to have together as a COMPLETE family!"
McBee's return could also have a major impact on the family's business. His former girlfriend and business associate Galyna Saltkovska previously suggested that he was eager to get back to work after his time away.
At the moment, there's no confirmation of when the new season of McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys will air.
