However, the situation took a different turn at one point, when Jackson allegedly refused to let Ellie leave for Memphis for her further studies. Jackson Hopper had initially decided to go for trial instead of a plea deal in February 2026. Notably, Jackson had denied that he shot Ellie, and the trial date was set for July 13, 2026. As part of the latest plea deal, Jackson Hopper won’t need to go to trial as he has pleaded guilty to a count of second-degree murder. Ellie’s family was also present at the court, and the judge told them that she was accepting the plea deal so that they could move on. The judge also mentioned that she feels sorry for the loss suffered by Ellie’s family and told them that she is accepting the plea deal so that they don’t have to return to the court. Ellie’s family attorney, Mark S. McDaniel Jr., reacted to the decision of the court and said:

“Today’s resolution allows them to move on. We ask that you continue to give them their privacy. Ellie was an incredible soul who made such an impact in the 22 years that she had on this earth. She was going to make an incredible physician, and the world would’ve been a better place if she was still here.”
