The former fighter pilot has now transitioned to a commercial pilot, joining FLY91, a Goa-based airline, in September 2026. Abhinandan gained international prominence in 2019 after his altercation with Pakistan's fighter jets, detention in PoK, and eventual release.

Abhinandan Varthaman is a former IAF captain, whose February 2019 bravery will never be forgotten. At that time, his MiG-21 Bison fighter jet was shot down during an aerial dogfight. The Air Force officer had been flying as part of a mission to intercept a Pakistani jet that had crossed the LoC. However, when he ejected from his damaged aircraft, he landed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and was taken into custody by the rival nation's army.
Abhinandan Varthaman faced dire situations while being detained by the Pakistanis, during which a phone call with his wife, Tanvi Marwah was his only source of strength. Talking about Tanvi, she is much more than just the better half of the former IAF Wing Commander. She is a retired Indian Air Force Squadron Leader and thus is well-versed with the grueling nature of her husband's job.
Beyond his professional ventures, Abhinandan has his little world in Chennai with his beloved Tanvi and their two lovely children, including son, Tavish, who is around 13-14 years old as of 2026. Tavish was seen in a 2019 snap seated on the sofa at RR Hospital with his mom and Nirmala Sitharaman. At that time, the Minister of Finance visited the injured Abhinandan and met with his family.
Abhinandan Varthaman was tortured by the Pakistani officials after he was detained in PoK. According to The Print's source, the Inter-Services Intelligence employed classic 'good cop-bad cop' tactics to extract sensitive information about India from the then-Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. While one officer punched him and broke his ribs, the other got him a phone call to his wife, Tanvi Marwah. While they didn't get anything from the commander, the couple shared a light laugh amidst the difficult situation.
According to the source, Tanvi demonstrated great strength during the crisis. She channeled her inner confidence, calmness, and presence of mind when she got a call from her husband, Abhinandan. The call from Pakistan was routed through Saudi Arabia. While Tanvi was taken aback when she heard her husband's voice over the phone, she still showed her presence of mind and recorded the conversation.
At a time when most would break down, the then-Wing Commander Abhinandan showed immense confidence and spoke calmly. Apart from the obvious questions about the commander's well-being, she asked him what she should tell their children about his whereabouts. Abhinandan, in a composed voice, asked her to tell the kids that he was in jail. He was quoted as saying:
"Tell them Papa jail mein hain."
It showcases Abhinandan's immense mental strength, which was accentuated after the light-hearted conversation with his better half, Tanvi Marwah.
