The Gosselin family's years-long feud is once again making headlines after Collin Gosselin announced his upcoming memoir, In the Shadow of Eight, promising to reveal what life was really like behind the scenes of Jon & Kate Plus 8.
Jon and Kate Gosselin tied the knot on June 12, 1999, and years later, they famously renewed their wedding vows in August 2008 alongside their eight children. During their 10-year marriage, they welcomed twins Cara and Mady in 2000, followed by sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, and Joel in 2004.
The family rose to national fame through Jon & Kate Plus 8, which chronicled the challenges of raising twins and sextuplets. While the siblings grew up together in the public eye, their parents' bitter 2009 divorce and years of custody disputes ultimately split the family, with several siblings now estranged from one another.
Mady and Cara Gosselin, now adults, have maintained a close relationship with their mother, Kate, following their parents' 2009 divorce. However, their bond with Jon has been severed. The father of eight previously said he hasn't spoken to either daughter since 2014 despite occasionally reaching out.
Over the years, Mady has publicly defended her mother and occasionally even spoken out about her own estrangement from her brother, Collin. Contrary to Jon's statements, Mady has repeatedly alleged that it was Collin's behavior that made reconciliation impossible. Collin, too, has acknowledged that he no longer has relationships with most of his siblings.
Collin's years of estrangement from his mother are no news, as the duo's fallout began as early as 2016, when Collin was just 12 years old. His relationship with Kate is arguably the most strained in the family. After the reality TV alum placed Collin in a behavioral treatment facility in 2016, things shattered between them.
It was Jon Gosselin who fought with the court and ultimately gained full custody of Collin in 2018, shortly after he was released from the facility. Since then, the father-son duo has developed a close-knit bond and publicly called out Kate for her alleged cruel tactics in "alienating" Collin from the family.
Collin has repeatedly accused his mother of physical and emotional abuse, allegations Kate has consistently denied. Jon has also publicly argued multiple times that while Collin may have been a "difficult child", he was falsely institutionalized. Jon even claimed that Kate had "created a diagnosis" in an attempt to "erase" Collin's presence from the family.
Kate, on her part, has consistently maintained that placing Collin in treatment was necessary because of what she described as his behavioral and psychiatric issues. Now 22, Collin says his upcoming memoir will finally tell his side of the story after years of public speculation.
Unlike many of her siblings, only Hannah Gosselin appears to have maintained relationships with both Jon and Kate. Although she chose to live with Jon as a teenager, Hannah has previously described her relationship with Kate as stable, saying they regularly stay in touch through text and call.
Hannah's ability to stay connected to both parents has made her one of the few strong links in the largely fractured family. The remaining sextuplets, including Alexis, Leah, Joel and Aaden, have largely stayed out of the public spotlight.
However, reports say the siblings continue to have close relationships with Kate. Jon has also acknowledged he has little or no contact with them. According to Jon, years of custody disputes contributed to the growing distance between him and several of his children. However, he still hopes that all eight siblings will eventually reconnect despite years of estrangement.
Once celebrated as one of reality television's most beloved families, the Gosselins have since become one of its most fractured, with years of custody battles, estrangements, and public allegations dividing the family. Nearly 20 years after Jon & Kate Plus 8 made the Gosselins household names, the family remains very much divided.
Jon is still closest with Hannah and Collin, both of whom attended his wedding to Stephanie Lebo in 2025. Collin has also publicly called Jon’s former longtime partner, Colleen Conrad, his "real mom," praising her for being by his side during one of the hardest times in his life.
