In the series, James Van Der Beek plays the role of 'Dean Wilson', a local mayoral candidate and Seattle school district superintendent. His character develops a friendship with 'Elle Woods' mother, 'Eva', played by June Diane Raphael. James' character first appears in Episode 3, making it his final TV appearance before his death in February 2026.

Despite his illness, his cast members recalled that the late actor had a positive attitude throughout the filming. According to actor Jacob Moskovitz, they did not share many scenes, but the late actor regularly joined the cast during his lunch breaks. At the same time, he made everyone around him feel welcome. In fact, June mentioned that James often spoke about his wife, Kimberly and their six children whenever they had some time off work. In her words:

How did Elle pay tribute to James Van Der Beek?

After the end of Episode 3, viewers see a simple but emotional title that reads, "In the loving memory of James Van Der Beek". In fact, the tribute appears just before the closing credits, honouring the actor's final contribution to television. In turn, the viewers praised the production for recognising his legacy in such a heartfelt way.

Reese Witherspoon has produced Elle. It follows Elle Woods's journey through her high school years. Lexi Minetree plays the titular role. Despite being the executive producer of the show rather than acting in it, it has become an unexpected farewell to one of TV's most loved actors.
