Canada was emerging as a winner in the match against Qatar, taking a lead by 3-0. While the match was approaching the second half with a few minutes left, Ismael Kone tried to get the ball for himself. However, things did not work as planned after midfielder Assim Madibo went to get the ball for himself and injured Kone in the leg. Notably, Ismael fell on the ground after the injury, who was looking at his leg while covering his mouth.
The players appeared upset when they realised what had happened with Ismael Kone. On the other hand, Assim Madibo was given a red card and had to leave the field. Madibo became emotional as he walked away. A team member of Qatar immediately went towards Ismael and asked for help. Ismael was surrounded by all the players while medics arrived on the field. Ismael was taken away on a stretcher, and he was spotted waving to the crowd at the same time.
The seriousness of the injury also stopped the broadcasters from doing a replay of everything that happened. ITV co-commentator, Andros Townsend, was heard saying that he was lost for words. Ismael was first taken to the dressing room, following which he was hospitalised. Before that, Assim Madibo apologised to Ismael. The player has reportedly been injured in the fibula and tibia. Captain for the Canada team, Stephen Eustaquio, recalled that he saw Kone’s leg and realised that something was wrong. Coach Jesse Marsch reacted by saying:
“He’s so imperfect but that’s why you love him. He can do great things and the next moment he loses concentration. He embodies a lot of what the team is. It’s a huge loss for us. He’ll be fine, we’ll get him good doctors. He’s got a big future and he’s a big part of everything we’ll do.”
Following Ismael Kone’s injury, the Qatari bench objected to Assim Madibo’s dismissal from the field. The players allegedly claimed that Madibo should have received a yellow card based on what he did. This led to an intense confrontation that involved the players, coaches, and Qatar’s staff. Coach Jesse Marsch claimed that he was able to hear the bone snap. In a lengthy statement, he said that he will meet Kone after a press conference, adding that his family is with him right now. He further stated:
“Your heart goes out to him, and everybody’s a little shaken by the experience, because of the nature of the injury and also because Ismael is a big part of the team. You saw also that he was waving to the crowd and almost making everybody else feel at ease with the fact that he’s injured, and that’s an incredible statement about Ismael as a person, but this is (also) our team.”
Jesse Marsch said that he is well aware of his team’s “special character,” which is displayed in various moments. He recalled the fact that whatever happened in the field represented the best side of the team, specifically at a time when everything was almost over, and they had to stay focused on the game.
