Marvel's The Punisher: One Last Kill is finally here, and fans cannot keep calm. The film has been making headlines for a while now, and with its release, it has delighted MCU fans. However, with the excitement comes a series of questions about where exactly in the MCU timeline and Jon Bernthal's long-term story as 'Frank Castle' does The Punisher fit. Well, according to the reports, the Disney+ special will serve as a crucial link between the classic Netflix series, Daredevil: Born Again, and 'Frank's' future appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The Punisher: One Last Kill is a special featurette that is said to focus on John Bernthal's 'Frank Castle', also known as the 'Punisher'. According to reports, it will be the first project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature an anti-hero in the lead role, following his introduction to the superhero world in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. However, that is not the only crossover 'Frank' will also be a part of the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The show is created under the banner of Marvel Television and will premiere directly to streaming on May 12, 2026.
It is directed by the well-known director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who also co-wrote the script with Bernthal. The latter is a veteran in portraying the character, as he first took up the mantle a decade ago in the Netflix Marvel shows and even led his own series. The series is said to introduce hints and background that will be important to the future of the MCU. As fans are already aware, most of what occurs in the Marvel Universe is interconnected.
The details of The Punisher: One Last Kill have been kept a surprise for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans ever since the project was first announced. However, based on the trailer released by Marvel Entertainment and Disney+ on April 9 2026, some details suggest what's in store. So, if you haven't had a chance to binge the series yet, here's what you need to know. The 1:41-minute clip opens with 'Frank' sitting alone in a room trying to fight his nightmares. It is the same as his Netflix origin story, with his wife and children being killed in front of him and his time in service as a US Marine.
We also see 'Curtis Hoyle' make an appearance from the Netflix, Punisher show. For the unversed, he is a disabled Navy veteran who leads a therapy group and, more importantly, one of 'Frank's' few friends. However, even as 'Frank' stays lost in his visions, violence erupts all around him. Soon, the 'Punisher' is forced into action. The trailer shows him jumping through fire, fighting armed men in buildings, and acting as a guardian angel for children in distress. The logline to the special reads:
"As Frank Castle searches for meaning beyond revenge, an unexpected force pulls him back into the fight."
Fans have been waiting to see where exactly the series fits in. Well, their wait has been fruitful, as Marvel has clarified that The Punisher: One Last Kill takes place during Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. It will fill in the period between 'Frank's' old Netflix series and his upcoming big-screen debut. The season will take place after The Punisher and before the events of Daredevil: Born Again. However, the story will explore 'Frank's' life right after he tried to walk away from violence and assumes a low-key existence.
However, his vacation is cut short as he is dragged back into war. The special is set in 2027, overlapping with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. Fans have been over the moon about the series, with a fan commenting on X, "This special literally sits between the Netflix Punisher era and the Spider-Man movie, so it explains how he gets from one to the other." Another viewer said, "If you want to understand Frank's journey to fighting crime in New York, you have to watch this in order with the Daredevil seasons."
Director, Reinaldo Marcus Green, who co-wrote the special with John Bernthal, has described the story as a "no-holds-barred" return to 'Frank Castle's' darkest instincts. According to Green, the special picks up with 'Frank' trying to live a life free of vengeance and anger, only to be pulled back in by a threat he cannot ignore. Bernthal also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the series and said:
"Let’s see if there’s a real openness and a hunger to let Frank be what Frank is, which is dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience. To make it difficult, to make it enormously psychologically complex and to steer away from any cuteness or humour and to really go full bore."
