The movie hit theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026, and received one of the biggest openings of the year. While the film’s casting and production design led to some criticism, audiences have undoubtedly accepted the film, setting higher expectations for whatever Nolan is planning next. The Odyssey has received both critical praise and strong commercial numbers. Nolan’s take on the 2,700-year-old poem by Homer was reportedly made on a USD 250 million budget. The Odyssey has given Christopher Nolan his biggest opening since the Batman franchise.
The Dark Knight Rises had opened globally with USD 249 million in 2012. As per the latest reports, The Odyssey has collected USD 124.5 million in North America alone. It is a notable number given the film carries an R rating. Universal Pictures had projected a USD 100 million opening weekend in North America.
The film has also set new records for premium-format screenings. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, The Odyssey earned over USD 81 million globally from IMAX screenings, making it one of the biggest IMAX openings ever. Demand for 70mm IMAX shows was high, with several theatres reporting sold-out midnight and early-morning screenings.
Among other places, the film did well in India. As per trade estimates, The Odyssey collected Rs. 20.76 crore gross (Rs. 17.40 crore net) on its opening day across languages. This makes it Nolan’s biggest opening day in India, ahead of Oppenheimer. Premium formats, especially IMAX, made up a major share of ticket sales. By the end of its opening weekend, the film crossed Rs. 70 crore at the Indian box office, marking Nolan’s biggest opening weekend in the country.
Christopher Nolan started his career as a director in 1998 with the crime thriller film, Following. He continued directing other films like Memento and Insomnia. Nolan also gained recognition as the director of three films based on Batman, released between 2005 and 2012.
Starting from Interstellar, Nolan maintained a gap of almost three years between his films. Oppenheimer was Nolan’s last film before The Odyssey, and it was released in 2023. Before the release of The Odyssey, Nolan was asked in an interview if the pattern of taking three more years for his next film would continue. Nolan agreed to the same and added:
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s ‘The Odyssey,’ of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of ‘The Odyssey’ if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
While The Odyssey continues to create records at the box office, Nolan has not opened up on the theme that he is planning to take for his next film. The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer’s Greek poem of the same name, and it focuses on the journey of the Greek king of Ithaca, 'Odysseus,' who meets some mythical beings while trying to reunite with his wife 'Penelope' after the Trojan War.
