Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleTaylor Swift and Travis Kelce are finally married, and their fans can’t keep calm. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by actor, Adam Sandler and saw many leading names from the entertainment and sports world. The much-awaited wedding took place at Madison Square Garden in New York. While many speculated about Taylor’s choice of MSG as the wedding venue, it has a connection to the iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor.
Way before the iconic wedding ceremony of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at MSG, legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor had an extravagant party at MSG on October 17, 1957, hosted by her then-husband, film producer Mike Todd. The party was hosted to mark the first anniversary of his Oscar-winning film Around the World in 80 Days. The party was attended by 18,000 guests whom Todd described as ‘close friends’.
Are you surprised by the numbers? That’s not all; the event had 400 journalists along with 12 elephants to adorn the Garden. MSG was decked out with flags from every nation and a giant balloon replica from the film. The party had an enormous cake that reportedly stood 14 feet high, and Elizabeth Taylor had cut the giant cake.
Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler provided music for the show while newsman Walter Cronkite covered the event live on CBS. As per reports, the crowd was served 4,000 pizzas, 36,000 doughnuts and 25,000 hot dogs. However, the event soon turned messy with guests throwing food at the venue in a massive food fight, and it soon became a messy affair. Later, Todd revealed that he had learned a lesson about not throwing parties on such a big scale.
Taylor Swift has often voiced her love and admiration for Elizabeth Taylor. The Grammy winner released a track from her album The Life of a Showgirl, paying homage to the legendary actress. For her wedding, Swift wore a white gown reportedly designed by Jonathan Anderson, Dior's Creative Director of the Women's, Men's, and Haute Couture collections.
Earlier reports suggested that Swift had drawn inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor's iconic 1950 wedding gown, though the final look ultimately came through Dior's modern couture lens. An insider told the Daily Mail:
"Taylor spent so much time looking at old photos of Elizabeth Taylor when she was making her music video for that song that she became enamored with the movie queen’s style. So when she started thinking about her wedding dress, she looked up Elizabeth’s old gowns online."
Elizabeth wore a formal satin wedding gown featuring a fitted bodice and full skirt, a high neckline and long sleeves, which was traditional at that time. The source also revealed that Taylor was inspired by Elizabeth’s gown because it was old-fashioned, came in at the waistline, and featured lace detailing.
Elizabeth Taylor’s son, Christopher Wilding, once revealed that Taylor Swift had many similarities to his mother. In a conversation with People, he stated:
“She and my mom do seem like kindred spirits. They are both the very embodiment of female empowerment. The way [Swift] has deftly captured the similarities and parallel tracks in their careers and personal lives is delightful.”
