Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 has been all about shocking revelations and confessions. After the jaw-dropping reveals about Eleven and Vecna's truths in the prior episodes, episode 7 closed with a real tear-jerker. In what fans are calling one of the most emotionally significant moments in the entire series, Will Byers finally comes out to his family and friends.

While this supernatural series has largely been about monsters, Season 5, with its darkest revelations, is making us realise one thing loud and clear: more than those claws and tentacles, secrets are the most dangerous weapons in Vecna's possession. With Will's quiet yet deeply powerful revelation, the battle against Vecna gets a turning point. Here's why.

Does Mike realise Will's feelings?

A common query that has surged online after Will's coming out episode is that whether Mike realises he is the "crush" Will talks about. Well, the short answer is, yes, he does, quietly but painfully. When 'Will Byers' (Noah Schnapp) admits that he once had a crush on someone who couldn't love him back. At this moment, the camera quietly lingers on 'Mike Wheeler' (Finn Wolfhard) just long enough to matter. While there's no verbal confirmation, the unspoken words of that poignant moment say everything.

Creators have since confirmed what fans felt instinctively: this is the mmoment Mike finally connects the dots, from Will's unyielding loyalty to his silent tears when he saw him and Eleven together. Recently, Ross Duffer of the Duffer Brothers told PEOPLE:

"That was the intent. Once Will is talking about Tammy and all that and his experience, yeah, it's Mike - and his friends - all realising and understanding now for the first time, even if Mike has been somewhat oblivious over these years, what his friend is saying."

The group's reaction says everything

The group's reaction to Will's long monologue is what Stranger Things has really been all about. Remember, we are talking about the 1980s, when queer identity was a tabboo and considered a shame, unlike the much welcoming 21st century. The scene could have gone very differently; instead, it's gentle. Will's mom, Joyce (Winnona Ryder) reassures Will immediately, as Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), who had already seen through his brother's silence, quietly stands beside him. The entire group closes in, no questions asked, but with certainty.

With nothing left to expose, Will is no longer Vecna's leverage, because the thing he was most afraid of losing is proven to be safe. His family and friends have welcomed him wholeheartedly, and they all stayed. The acceptance directly contradicts Vecna's prophecy and breaks his psychological hold over Will.

Noah Schnapp cried reading Will's monologue scene

Actor Noah Schnapp's performance peaks here, grounding the moment. The actor, who has often revealed he sees a reflection of himself in 'Will Byers', recalled getting emotionally overwhelmed the first time he read the monologue. Talking about shooting the "nerve-racking" scene, Schnapp told Variety:

"I was so wrapped up in my emotions and what I was feeling that I kind of blocked out everyone around me...it was so nerve-racking to know that the entire cast was there watching me...t was all a blur. I don’t really remember anyone’s reactions, but watching it back, it was nice to see. It did feel genuine."

How Will's coming out gives him the upper hand in the fight against Vecna

More than just a romantic confession, Will's coming out marks a turning point in the fight for survival against Henry, aka Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Earlier in Season 5 Volume 2, Vecna uses his Hive Mind to exploit Will's truma by showing him terrifying visions of a future where he is rejected by everyone he loves if his secret ever comes out. It's a known fact by now that Vecna's true weapon is not just minds: he feeds off shame, fear, and silence.

Now that Will comes out on his own terms, he promptly takes the weapon away, gaining advantage over Henry. His deepest secret is now out in the open, and it's no longer a threat. And that’s exactly why Vecna is finally losing his grip.

As Stranger Things barrels towards its final episode, the group's inner monsters are coming out, and that's perhaps the biggest strength they need in confronting Vecna and seeing him eye-to-eye. The finale drops on December 31, 2025, at 8 p.m. (ET).
