Jurassic Park icon Sam Neill died on July 13, 2026, at the age of 78, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that spanned more than five decades in film and television. While millions knew him as 'Dr. Alan Grant,' the fearless paleontologist who faced dinosaurs head-on, those closest to him knew him simply as a devoted father and grandfather.

The news of Neill's passing has left the entire entertainment industry in mourning. Here's everything to know about the late actor's four children and the family he leaves behind.

Sam Neill is survived by four children

Contrary to some earlier reports, Sam Neill was the father of four children, including three biological children and one adopted daughter. His family includes Andrew, Tim, Elena, and Maiko, along with several grandchildren. Sam Neill's eldest son, Andrew, was born when the actor was in his early twenties. The identity of his mother is not known. After he was born, Neill placed him for adoption. The father and the son spent more than two decades apart before reuniting in 1994.

Neill later reflected on their reunion in his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, describing it as one of the most meaningful chapters of his life. Despite their unconventional beginning, the two rebuilt their relationship over the years and remained close. Unlike his other siblings, Andrew has stayed out of the public eye.

The actor's second child, son Tim Neill, was born in 1983, when he was in a relationship with New Zealand-based actress Lisa Harrow. While he followed his father's footsteps into the industry, stayed largely behind the camera. He has reportedly worked in film production within the camera and electrical departments in major films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Justice League, and The Matrix Reloaded.

Tim Neill once recalled attending the London premiere of Jurassic Park as a child in 1993, where he got to witness the immense global stardom his father had achieved. At the event, his legendary father appeared alongside director Steven Spielberg and even met Princess Diana.

Sam Neill welcomed his first daughter (third child), Elena Neill, in 1991, with his second wife, Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe. Elena initially pursued acting, appearing in Australian films like Top of the Lake. However, she later chose a career as a tattoo artist and now reportedly lives in Melbourne.

A proud girl-dad, Sam occasionally opened up about being a grandfather after Elena welcomed a son. He humorously admitted that while he wasn't much for baby cuddles, he enjoyed spending quiet moments with his grandson.

When it comes to his biological children, the Jurassic Park star had three. His fourth child, Maiko Neill, is actually Watanabe's daughter from a previous relationship, whom Neill adopted after marrying her mother. She, too, has largely stayed away from public attention but has maintained ties to Neill's beloved Central Otago winery, Two Paddocks.

The actor made one of his rare family-related social media posts in 2021 when Maiko welcomed her son, Nahlo. "The love. I don't put family on media stuff. Except when they're brand new," Neill wrote while introducing his newborn grandson. The heartfelt post offered fans a rare glimpse into the deeply personal side of the actor, who generally preferred to keep his family life private.

Inside Sam Neill's turbulent love life

Neill's personal life unfolded across two long-term relationships and a relatively short one that left him a "solitary single man" in his final years.

Sam met his first wife, actress Lisa Harrow, while working on the set of Omen III: The Final Conflict. He and Lisa welcomed Tim Neill in 1983, and the couple stayed together for nearly a decade before splitting in 1989. While the Caterpillar actress is often described as Sam's first wife, more reliable accounts suggest ot was a long-term partnership rather than a legal marriage.

It was in 1989 that Sam married Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe, whom he had met while working on Dead Calm. Together they welcomed Elena, and Neill also adopted Maiko. Their marriage lasted nearly three decades before ending in 2017.

In the years that followed, Neill was linked to Australian journalist Laura Tingle, though he remained unmarried at the time of his death. Neither Laura Tingle nor Sam Neill commented on what led to the end of their relationship. However, in his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, The actor reflected on his relationships and called himself a "solitary single man".

Sam Neill deliberately kept his children away from the spotlight. Instead, he preferred sharing stories about family gatherings, his vineyard, and the simple joys of being a grandfather.
