Netflix's 'Murder In Monaco' brought of the murder of billionaire banker, Edmond Safra and his nurse, Ted Maher to the small screens. Here's everything you need to know about it.
After stories of Kendra Licari and Ed Gein, Netflix is back with another true-crime documentary. This time, it is about the mysterious 1999 death of billionaire banker, Edmond Safra. As the saying goes, sometimes the closest people are one's worst enemies, Edmond's nurse, Ted Maher was arrested on charges of his murder. Released on December 17, 2025, the documentary, Murder in Monaco, investigates the killing of Edmond Safra and was directed by Hodges Usry. It sparked discussion regarding the incident, which dominated the headlines back in the early 2000s. Here's what happened to Ted Maher after Edmond Safra's demise.
Murder in Monaco revisits the night of December 3, 1999, when a fire broke out in Edmond Safra's ultra-secure Monte Carlo penthouse. At that time, Edmond was with two of his nurses, Vivian Torrente and Ted Maher. Ted started a fire in a wastepaper basket to create panic in his employer and later to rescue him, earning his special favour or becoming his favourite nurse. The billionaire had several nurses tending to him due to his Parkinson's disease, and Ted was reported to be jealous of them. Ted's confessed motive behind the arson was to stage a heroic rescue, but the fire quickly spread out of control.
Ted reportedly told Edmond and nurse, Vivian, that there were intruders in the penthouse and that they should stay locked in the bathroom for safety. To make the intruder story more believable, Ted Maher stabbed himself, claiming that two masked men had attacked him and set the blaze. Even when firefighters arrived and pleaded with Edmund Safra to open the door, he refused, believing the people outside were the armed assassins Ted had described. By the time rescuers breached the room two hours later, both Edmond Safra and Vivian Torrente had died of smoke inhalation. Ted's intentions were not to kill Edmond; however, his miscalculation regarding the after-effects of arson led to the tragic incident.
The American nurse and former Green Beret, Ted Maher, was arrested immediately following the 1999 death of Edmond Safra. He initially stuck to his masked intruder's story; however, days later, he confessed to the crime. In December 2002, Ted was convicted of arson causing death and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 2003, CBS News obtained an interview with Ted's then-wife, Heidi Maher, who was in disbelief regarding the entire incident. She claimed that Ted was innocent and was being framed for Edmond Safra's murder. According to her, the investigating officers blackmailed Ted by showing him his wife's passport and making him believe that they stripped and tortured Heidi.
Heidi alleged that Ted was forced to admit to a crime he didn't commit, and that the real culprit was someone else whom the police wouldn't arrest. Some critics even believed Heidi's narrative because, despite Edmond Safra's world-class security team (including guards reportedly trained by Mossad), none were on duty the night he passed away, making his death seem pre-planned.
Just a month after his 10-year sentencing, Ted Mehar escaped from the Monaco prison cell in January 2003. He escaped by sawing through bars and using a rope made of trash bags. However, his efforts went in vain, and he was captured hours later at a hotel in Nice, France. Ted served eight years of his 10-year sentence and was released in October 2007, subsequently returning to the United States. He then reportedly lived as a truck driver in Carlsbad, New Mexico, when he was arrested again on charges of vehicle theft, fraud, and kidnapping his ex-wife's two dogs.
In 2023, while entangled in legal issues, Ted Maher was charged with soliciting a prison inmate to kill his ex-wife via a fentanyl overdose to steal hidden money. In March 2025, he was found guilty of the murder-for-hire plot and was sentenced in July 2025 to nine years in prison. According to the New York Post, Ted is currently incarcerated at a medical correctional facility near Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is undergoing treatment for late-stage throat cancer.
