After nearly 3 decades of Practical Magic's release, the Owens women are back once again in Practical Magic. But this time the stakes are higher with a last chance to break the family curse. The sequel marks the return of Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who play the roles of sisters 'Sally' and 'Gillian Owens'. In fact, the feature film also introduces new witches who is forced to deal with a centuries-old spell, which has haunted their bloodline for generations.
Practical Magic 2 starts by showcasing that the Owens family was never really able to escape their infamous love curse. 'Sally's' husband, 'Gary Hallet,' passed away. His death convinced her family that their tragic destiny is still the same. 'Sally,' who is already heartbroken and fearful of losing more, turns away from magic. She even casts a spell to remove all memories of witchcraft from her daughters, 'Antonia' and 'Kylie'.
Several years pass by, and 'Kylie' falls in love with her boyfriend, 'Gideon'. However, when she confesses her love to him, another disaster happens. He gets seriously injured in an accident and falls into a coma. It seems that he has become the latest victim of the Owens curse. Eventually, 'Kylie' is furious with her mother for hiding the truth about their magical heritage and begins the search for answers.
Over time, her investigation takes her to the mysterious Book of the Raven, an ancient family text. It is believed that the book has some clues to end the curse forever. Owing to her determination to save 'Gideon', 'Kylie' goes on a trail of visions across the Atlantic to England. The latter happens to be the birthplace of the Owens family legacy, which forces the entire Owens family into the quest.
'Sally' and 'Gillian' travel to England to stop 'Kylie' from trying the dangerous magic herself. Meanwhile, 'Antonia' joins them to protect her sister. When they are on their way to England, they find that some long-buried secrets about their ancestor, 'Maria Owens', and the beginning of the curse. At the same time, 'Sally' reconnects with her magic roots. She also meets 'Ian Wright', who is a special historian in dark magic. 'Ian' helps the Owens family solve the mystery.
Meanwhile, 'Kylie' encounters 'Thomas Lockland', a seemingly ordinary farmhand who is eventually revealed to be an evil being who is linked to the Owens bloodline. When the threat increases, the women come to know that they will have to do more than a simple spell to break the curse.
Eventually, at the end, 'Sally,' 'Gillian,' and 'Kylie' combine their power to defeat 'Thomas.' After the threat ends, the Book of the Raven reveals the final part and the significant price required to end the curse forever.
The film's emotional climax revolves around 'Aunt Frances "Fanny" Owens', who finds out that they need the sacrifice of a witch's life to end the curse. So, after spending several years protecting her family, 'Franny' gives the ultimate sacrifice. She chooses love over self-preservation and willingly gives her life to ensure that the future generations of the Owens family can life happily without any fear of heartbreak.
'Franny's' death becomes a turning point in the story, which ends their 300-year-old ancestral curse. The moment becomes more emotional when 'Aunt Jet's' spirit comes, creating a powerful moment in the story. After a year, the family starts to live without the shadow of the curse. 'Kylie' moves forward with 'Gideon' without any stress of a mishappening, and 'Antonia' embraces her magic heritage. After 'Franny' and 'Jet's' death, 'Sally' and 'Gillian' receive the responsibility as the next matriarchs.
Practical Magic 2 is directed by Susanne Bier, who serves as the continuation and the end of the 1988 film, Practical Magic. The sequel brings out the elements from Alice Hoffman's The Book of Magic. It marks the return of Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest. They are joined by newcomers Joey King, Maisie Williams, Lee Pace, and Xolo Mariduena.
