Now, as we wait for more updates, here's a look at when former Fifth Harmony member, Lauren Jauregui said she was “definitely outed” by him.
During an episode of Red Table Talk: The Estefans, Lauren Jauregui spoke about cyberbullying and slut-shamming, especially going into the details about how Perez Hilton had exposed her sexuality while she was in Fifth Harmony. Recalling the experience, she said that it happened when she was still a teen and had been dating her then-girlfriend for about a year. Lauren said:
"I'd been dating the girlfriend that I've had at the time for probably a year at that point, but we had fallen in love when I was 15. I was at my uncle's wedding in New Orleans, and my aunt very innocently posted the photos from the photo booth onto her Facebook page."
Lauren explained that her aunt had posted a link for their family to be able to click on. However, her fans somehow got access to the link, and to make things worse, said that they found a picture of Lauren and her girlfriend kissing while they were both drunk. Once her fans found the photos, they ended up reaching Perez Hilton, who then proceeded to out her to the general public. She said:
"He definitely outed me. I wasn't ready because I'm also Latina. There was that whole looming thing of, 'What is my community going to feel about me? Are they even going to accept me?' I know that my family obviously accepted me. But was that something that I was willing to deal with on a public scale?"
After being outed in such a manner, Lauren shared that her extended family members began reaching out to her parents about the news. She said that she “felt like my own process was violated."
Meanwhile, Perez Hilton claimed that he was “not sorry nor remotely remorseful” for posting Lauren's photo with her girlfriend at the time. According to him, he didn't consider what he did as outing the former Fifth Harmony member. While he claimed that he was “sad” Lauren was bothered by his actions, he refused to fake an apology. In his words:
"I'm genuinely sad that she was bothered by that, [but] I'm not gonna fake an apology. It was her fans that caused this photo to go viral. By the time I commented on it, it had already gone viral. It wasn't like I was given this piece of information or a photo and I was the first person to share it with the world; it was already trending by the time I chimed in."
Perez said that he had posted the photo with the caption, “Why are Fifth Harmony fans being so extra over this photo of Lauren Jauregui kissing another girl? NBD.” According to him, Lauren shouldn't have been bothered by him posting the snap as the picture itself did “not imply anything about their sexuality.”
It is worth noting that this was not the first time that Perez had outed a celebrity. He had previously done the same with Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris. Perez admitted that while he was “definitely” sorry for outing the celebrities in the past, the situation with Lauren was completely different. Perez argued, “Is this outing? And is this wrong if I share this?”
