Nicolas Cage's USD 10.5M Malibu Mansion Nearly Falls Into Massive Sinkhole, Was The House Insured?

Nicolas Cage's sprawling Malibu mansion has become the center of a terrifying coastal disaster after a massive sinkhole opened directly outside the beachfront property. The collapse swallowed much of the driveway leading toward the home's garage, with concrete, asphalt, fencing, and other debris disappearing into the huge crater.

What initially looked like a terrifying problem at Cage's property has since grown into a much larger emergency, with Malibu officials ordering evacuations affecting 31 properties on the same street.

The actor, 62, bought the roughly 4,000-square-foot home in 2024 for USD 10.5 million. The property sits along Sea Level Drive near Lechuza Beach and features sweeping ocean views and a private rooftop deck.

The massive sinkhole opened up on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following high surf and coastal conditions that pummeled Southern California. Local officials attributed the collapse to coastal erosion from high waves and tides associated with Tropical Storm Marie. The crater quickly became enormous, with the Los Angeles Times reporting that by Tuesday evening it was approximately 25 feet deep and measured about 30 by 60 feet.

Photos from the scene showed a section of the driveway completely gone, with large pieces of concrete visible inside the hole. Workers and emergency crews were also photographed around the property as officials dealt with the damage. The situation became even more serious when the collapse affected access to Sea Level Drive. Being the only entry and exit point for the gated neighborhood, the situation has left emergency vehicles with severely limited access.

After the sinkhole appeared, Malibu declared a local emergency and reported that 31 properties were affected in the area. Seven homes were red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while another 24 were considered unsafe because emergency vehicles could not safely reach them. The displaced residents were taken to a temporary shelter.

Cage's mansion itself reportedly appeared to be undergoing renovations and was unoccupied when the collapse occurred, so there were no reports of injuries. The city has estimated that repairs and stabilization work could take around four weeks, although conditions along the coast could affect that estimated timeline.

That is one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the disaster. Cage almost certainly has some form of property insurance on a home worth millions, but having homeowners insurance does not necessarily mean the sinkhole damage will be covered. California's Department of Insurance says standard homeowners policies generally exclude damage caused by earth movement, including sinkholes, erosion, subsidence, landslides and related forms of ground movement.

That creates a potentially complicated situation for the actor. The collapse has been attributed to coastal erosion and high surf, rather than a conventional covered event such as fire or windstorm. California's insurance guidance specifically lists erosion and sinkholes among losses that standard homeowners policies generally exclude. Cage's representatives have not publicly commented on the damage or confirmed whether the property has insurance coverage for the incident.

There can, however, be exceptions depending on the exact policy and what investigators determine caused the damage. California recognizes an "efficient proximate cause" doctrine in certain insurance disputes, meaning the dominant cause of a chain of events can affect whether coverage applies. The state's Department of Insurance advises homeowners facing this type of loss to file a claim and have the insurer explain any denial using the specific policy language.

There is another complication in this situation. The most dramatic damage so far appears to involve the driveway and surrounding roadway rather than a confirmed collapse of the mansion itself. Determining responsibility for the private road, stabilization work, and property damage could therefore involve Cage, other homeowners, the homeowners association, and insurers.

For now, there is no public confirmation of Cage's insurance arrangements or whether his insurer has agreed to cover any portion of the damage. The timing has also raised broader concerns for Malibu. The city has warned that coastal erosion, high surf and potentially stronger El Niño conditions could create additional problems along Southern California's vulnerable coastline this fall and winter.

So while Cage's mansion may still be standing, the USD 10.5 million property now faces a far more complicated problem than a damaged driveway. The bigger question may be how much of the enormous bill for stabilizing the land and repairing the property will actually be covered.
