Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleWarren Buffett is best known as the former CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Being a widely successful investor, as of January 2026, Warren became the ninth-richest person in the world. With Warren always being in the spotlight, many have grown curious about his personal life, especially his wife, Astrid Buffett.
According to reports, Warren Buffett’s wife, Astrid Buffett, was born in 1946 in Germany after her parents had emigrated from Latvia. Her family relocated to the US when she was 5 years old. Being one of the five children in the family, she had to move into an orphanage with her two younger brothers when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Astrid spent her teen years in foster homes. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the University of Nebraska. However, she had to stop studying there after she ran out of money and could no longer pay for her tuition.
Eventually, Astrid began working at the insurance company, Mutual of Omaha. She then went on to manage a women's clothing store and later became a garde-manger at a couple of restaurants in Omaha. Being in that line of work, Astrid was later hired as the maître d’ at a local restaurant called The French Café.
Coming to Astrid and Warren Buffett’s relationship, the duo reportedly met when the billionaire was still married to his ex-wife, Susan. Near the end of their marriage, when Susan and Warren were living separately, the former had asked several of her friends if they could look after her husband since she knew he would not be able to keep the household running without her. One of the friends that she had asked at the time turned out to be Astrid.
It was during her early days in San Francisco that Astrid began visiting Warren Buffett. As they began spending more and more time in each other's company, she eventually moved into his home in May 1978. During an interview, Astrid claimed that back then her decision to move in was a no-brainer. She said, “I never gave it a thought. It just happened naturally.” Warren’s daughter, Susie, said that it was perfect as Astrid loved her dad. In her words:
“I think that my mother loved Astrid as a person and I think she also was glad that she was there because she loved my dad. She wanted him taken care of and happy, and there’s no one better than Astrid. She just loves my dad.”
Notably, in the beginning of their relationship, Warren continued to be with Astrid while still being legally married to Susan. However, in 2003, Susan was diagnosed with oral cancer and ultimately passed away from a stroke in 2004. After her death, Astrid became more involved in Warren Buffett’s affair. Previously, Astrid used to stay back when Warren and Susan used to attend major events, but now, she could openly accompany him.
It was in 2006 that the couple tied the knot. According to Warren's daughter, Susie, the former Berkshire Hathaway CEO had already been thinking about it “for a while.” Astrid and Warren’s wedding was reportedly only attended by Susie and the former’s sister.
Despite being married to a billionaire, Astrid has been characterized as thrifty and frugal when it comes to money. Reports suggest that she enjoys thrift shopping and even chose to wear a rather simple blouse and pants on her wedding day. According to Suzie, even if Warren did not have his massive wealth, Astrid would still be with him. She said:
“She has been with my father all these years for all the right reasons. I’m so thankful. She loves him and takes care of him. If Warren didn’t have a cent, she’d be with him.”
