Mahima Makwana was born on August 5, 1999, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Mahima was just five months old when she lost her father. At the time, her mother worked at an NGO and her brother was nine years old. It was her mom who pushed her into acting. At the age of nine, Mahima began giving auditions. However, she couldn’t tell her mom that she didn’t like acting. Recalling the days, Mahima shared on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast in 2021:

"My mother had always wanted to become an actress but couldn’t, so she pushed me towards acting. I started auditioning when I was nine. I would tell my mother that I wasn’t interested in acting. I didn’t understand this world. I would attend school for half the day, travel by bus to auditions and come back exhausted. But my mother kept pushing me. The biggest reason I became a part of this industry was that I wanted to support my family."

Mahima Makwana spent her childhood days in a chawl. She could barely experience school or college like other children. There was nobody else in her family who earned at that time. Relatives also judged them as they lived in chawls. However, one conversation with her mom changed things around them. Mahima’s breakthrough came with Zee TV’s Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke in 2012. Back then, she was just 13. She became a household name with the show. In her words:

"There was nobody else earning in the family. We lived in a chawl, and people—including relatives—often looked down upon us. One day my mother told me that before she left this world, she wanted to own a house. After that show, I bought my first home. I was just 14. I bought a house in Mira Road and also bought my first car."

Mahima’s acting career was anything but a bed of roses. Before becoming a TV lead, Mahima spent years working as a child artiste and junior actor, and those years were filled with a lot of disappointments. In the same podcast, Mahima recalled an incident on the set of Balika Vadhu that left her feeling humiliated. Recalling her humiliating experience, Mahima said:

"The director came to me and said, 'If you don’t know acting, then why are you here?' I felt humiliated. I went home, memorised my lines and worked harder. It became a learning experience. After Balika Vadhu, I got my first break as a protagonist, and there was no looking back."

Even after becoming a familiar face on TV, Mahima’s struggle was far from over. Breaking into films was another set of struggles. Despite working for nearly a decade, Mahima continued to struggle to break stereotypes linked to being just a television actress. However, things changed for good when she met Salman Khan.
