The Friends star was only 54 when he was found dead in the hot tub at his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. His death on October 28, 2023, was determined to have resulted from the acute effects of ketamine. Nearly three years later, his family continues to honor his memory.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the Matthew Perry House shared a heartfelt message from Morrison, along with a childhood photo of Perry. Remembering the sitcom legend, Suzanne wrote:

"August 19th. It’s his birthday. Matthew was born 57 years ago today, a day that I feel as keenly as if [it] all happened this very morning."

Suzanne reflected on both the happier memories of her son and the years in which he struggled with addiction. "Along with all the days he struggled, and the days he hid his addiction from the world, and even from me. Sweet, loving, funny, cantankerous, pig-headed Matthew, who wanted - so much - to be well. All the time. Everyday."

But Morrison’s most emotional words centered on what Perry wanted to do with his own experience. She shared that Perry's final days were spent thinking up ways to help people like him who suffered from addiction. Recalling that time, the heartbroken mother concluded by saying:

"I hear him saying over and over in those last days of his life, 'I just want to help people like me, stuck in the disease of addiction.' He can’t anymore. But we can. And with your help, we will."

Matthew Perry wanted to help others struggling with addiction

Matthew Perry had been vocal about his health struggles and his own addiction battle that even made him forget a huge chunk of Friends Season 3. He even opened up about his decades-long battle with addiction, documenting his experiences in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

Perry’s death brought renewed attention to the dangers of addiction and the challenges faced by people trying to recover. After the actor's death, his family and friends helped establish the Matthew Perry House, a Canada-based organization dedicated to supporting people affected by addiction and helping them access recovery resources.

His mother has repeatedly spoken about the difficulty of watching her son struggle. In a 2024 interview with TODAY, Morrison recalled how she still instinctively wanted to call Perry whenever something funny happened.

Morrison also spoke candidly about the guilt she carried as a mother. She remembered that Matthew was always very lonely in his soul. "I’m a very lucky woman, but there was one glitch; there was one problem. I couldn’t conquer it. I couldn’t help him."

Matthew Perry's unexpected death had come as a shock to many. While it was originally dismissed as an accidental overdose, further probe identified five people who deliberately killed him by administering extremely high doses of medications.

On May 27, 2026, Matthew Perry’s 60-year-old assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, was sentenced to 41 months in prison. Investigators say Kenneth had been repeatedly injecting the Friends actor with a drug, ketamine, which ended up taking his life. The doctor, who supplied ketamine to the actor, was sentenced to prison for 30 months, and Erik Farming, who sourced the drug, was sentenced to two years in prison.

Jasveen Sagha, known as 'The Ketamine Queen', was the last one to be sentenced in connection with Perry's death. She admitted to running a serious drug operation and selling Matthew Perry the dose of ketamine that took his life and caused his death.

For the world, he was the iconic 'Chandler Bing'; but for his mother, he was her whole world. Rest easy, Matthew.
