Behind the football helmet, Matt Suhey was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife Donna Suhey and their three children, Joe, Allison, and Scott. Family was always a significant part of Matt's life. Anyone who knew him shared how he was a loving husband and a responsible father. Eventually, his son, Joe Suhey walked the same path as his father and became a fullback at Penn State University.
Joe's decision has also kept the family's deep connection to the sport alive. For those who do not know, Matt himself played a significant role in carrying the long-running football tradition of his family forward. When he became deeply involved in his family life after retirement in 1989, he stayed connected to game in one way or the other. Alongside, he had maintained a strong relationship with his former teammates and the Bears organization.
After a memorable life, Matt died peacefully in his sleep on September 5, 2026. The update surfaced later in the public, leaving everyone stunned over the sudden turn of events. Matt's death is another significant loss for the members of the famous 1985 Bears squad.
Chicago fans personally admired Matt for his strong ties to the Bears. The bond continued even after his career ended. Matt was often seen at team brand events and reunions, where he expressed his delight on being a representative of the team. Apart from family and football, Matt's friendship with Walter Payton was an essential part of his life. At one point, they were the NFL's most memorable backfield partners in the 1980s.
Matt often called himself Walter's protector on the field and used his powerful blocking ability. Together with Walter's skills, they were one of the football's all-time giants. Later, after Walter died in 1999, Matt continued their friendship by supporting his family in difficult times.
Matt Suhey was born in a family with deep football roots, which immediately introduced him to the sport. He was part of Penn State before being selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1980 NFL Draft. After spending his decade-long career in the NFL with 148 regular-season games, he earned the reputation of being one of the league's most dependable fullbacks.
Matt mainly had to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. But it did not diminish his impressive career numbers as he ended his career on a high note with nearly 3,000 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. A moment football fans can rarely forget was his 11-yard touchdown against the New England Patriots. The exceptional shot enabled his team to secure a dominant 46-10 victory to get their hands on the first Super Bowl title.
