Lady Gaga's battle with a chronically painful illness

While the world is happy for Lady Gaga's new journey, fans are also reminded of her battle with a disease that kept her from living a normal life for years. For those who don't know, Gaga suffers from a condition called fibromyalgia, which affects over 5 million people in America alone. The Poker Face singer first opened up about her struggles in 2018 when she suddenly had to cancel her European tour.

Back in 2018, Lady Gaga took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to speak about a condition that had left her struggling with chronic pain. In a statement, she revealed that she had been suffering from the terrible condition that is fibromyalgia and reflected on how it was keeping her from living a normal life. She was quoted as saying:

What is fibromyalgia, and why is there a sudden interest in the condition Lady Gaga has had for years?

According to rheumatologist at St. Jude Heritage Medical Group, Sanjay Chabra, fibromyalgia's impact on a person's life can be "profound". He revealed that the condition can cause constant pain throughout the body, which can trigger a series of effects, including sleep disturbance, sensitivity to temperature and pain with contact, as well as problems with concentration and memory commonly known as 'brain fog.' For those who don't know what the condition is, the doctor explained:

"Fibromyalgia can cause pain in the body's tissues and joints similar to arthritis. But while arthritis often revolves around a problem in the joints, such as worn cartilage or inflammation, fibromyalgia is considered a neurological issue where the brain is extremely sensitive to pain signals in the body."

While the condition is chronic, there's no specific cause. However, Dr. Sanjay Chabra has noted that "genetics could play a part if there is a family history of fibromyalgia." This has contributed to renewed interest in the condition. Several fans noticed that Lady Gaga's motherhood journey was kept extremely under wraps, which has led many to question if the Bad Romance singer had opted for surrogacy or adoption. While there is no confirmation, the recent buzz has sparked a wave of speculation and questions about the baby and Gaga's journey.

However, while genetics can be a factor, it is not a hard and fast rule; symptoms of fibromyalgia can be triggered after a traumatic incident, whether physical or psychological. In Lady Gaga's case, it is often speculated that it was triggered by the assault and pregnancy she faced at the age of 19. Dr. Sanjay Chabra further revealed that women are more likely to get fibromyalgia than men.

People who have other health conditions such as autoimmune disease may be at higher risk as well. Talking about the treatment plan for fibromyalgia, there is no cure for the condition. However, its symptoms can be managed with a treatment plan tailored to each patient, which may include medication, physical activity, adequate sleep, and mental health therapy.
