For those unaware, the duo has been together for more than a decade. Their love story began on the small screen. Now, Russell and Rhys have many memories to look back on.
During an interview, Keri Russell got candid about her relationship with her longtime partner, Matthew Rhys. She said that it was “so fun” getting to know each other and eventually falling in love while working together on the show The Americans. Interestingly, in the movie, the duo played the role of a couple.
Russell confessed that if they had met when they were 20, they would not have been together. However, she claims that they met at the right moment. She shared:
"I'm really able to enjoy it, you know? And it was such a lark that we got to do that together in that kind of... at that prime of our lives. And, you know, had we met when we were 20, we wouldn't be together. We were just in the right moment."
In the same interview, Keri Russell said that when she recently came across a GIF of her and Matthew Rhys from the show, it led her to point out how young they looked. She claimed that it was pretty special that they had a record of their “courtship” thanks to them working together.
Russell and Rhys played the roles of Russian spies in The Americans. Calling it a ‘sexy’ start to their relationship, the actress said:
"It was so kind of sexy and spy. And that world was just so languid. And it's obviously fun, as you know, to be a part of something that's such a success and so beloved."
Keri Russell then shed light on how she and her partner differ when it comes to their work in the entertainment industry. She gushed about how Rhys is a different kind of actor who just loves to work. When she would ask him what he was doing for the week, Rhys would sometimes tell her he was going to do some play readings.
However, when asked if he would actually want to act in the play, Rhys would tell her no. Russell further said:
"He just loves the work of it. He's not as precious about every single job. I wanna do jobs that I think are really good. That really speak to me, and that I feel like I could do something with. And the truth is, I don't think I'd be good at everything."
At the 2026 Emmys on September 14, 2026, Matthew Rhys made history by becoming the first person to have ever won two lead acting Emmys in a single night. Notably, he won for the Netflix limited series The Beast in Me and the Apple TV+ comedy titled Widow’s Bay. In addition to this, his lead acting win in a drama for The Americans in 2018 made Rhys the first male actor to have won in all three categories.
Meanwhile, his partner, Keri Russell, who herself was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, made sure not to get too swept up in the pomp and circumstance. Rhys shared that Russell threatened to not go home with him if he won both awards. He said, “She goes, ‘If you win both, I'm not coming home with you.’ OK, fair enough.”
