John F Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette have been making headlines for the limited series about their love story. Here's everything about their rocky marriage.
John F Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette are currently leading the headlines for their recent limited series by FX, Love Story. Ever since the show got released, JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s highly publicised relationship has once again become a topic of discussion among the masses. People are eager to know every detail of their relationship.
Carolyn and JFK Jr.’s relationship was a perfect fairytale. He was one of the most handsome men in America, and she was the gorgeous fashionista. Together, they were the power couple who never thought twice before professing their love in public. However, there were also rumours that JFK Jr. and Carolyn faced intimacy issues after some years into their marriage and were heading for a divorce.
There were many rumours about JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s relationship, which reportedly turned sour within a few years. There were many reasons reported behind it. Carolyn never liked the constant media attention on her and JFK Jr.’s relationship. He, on the other hand, was the favourite of the media.
There were rumours that, despite the love portrayed by JFK Jr. and Carolyn, there were intimacy issues between the two. In Edward Klein’s book, The Kennedy Curse, it was revealed that JFK Jr. and Carolyn’s marriage was on the rocks in 1999. The issue arose largely from discussions about having children. As per the author, John told one of his friends:
“I want to have kids, but whenever I raise the subject with Carolyn, she turns away and refuses to have s*x with me. It’s not just about s*x. It’s impossible to talk to Carolyn about anything. We’ve become like total strangers. I’ve had it with her. It’s got to stop. Otherwise, we’re headed for divorce.”
However, it was the other way around. According to the book, Carolyn was not comfortable with the idea of bringing a child into a world under constant media scrutiny. Media’s attention was something John had lived with his entire life and had grown used to, but Carolyn found it difficult and, at times, even frightening. As per the book, Carolyn told a friend about the prospect of starting a family and stated:
“I hate living in a fishbowl. John may be comfortable living like this, but I’m not. How could I bring a child into this kind of world?”
There were many speculations that swirled about whether JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy were going to get a divorce before the couple met with their fatal accident. The year 1998 was a difficult time for John as the Kennedy family was dealing with the impending death of John’s closest cousin, Anthony Radziwill, who was battling cancer. On the other hand, John was finding it difficult to find a new financier for his struggling political magazine, George.
The book, JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography, revealed the intense pressures both John and Carolyn were facing in their final days. In the book, John’s close friend, Sasha Chermayeff revealed how the couple was giving a tough time to each other. Speaking about the same, she shared:
“They John and Carolyn were spiting each other. Maybe Carolyn was trying to make him worry by not coming home so then he did it the next night. He was not with her the last two nights.”
Another controversy in John and Carolyn’s marriage was the infidelity rumours. For several years, the tabloids have speculated what kind of relationship Carolyn Besette shared with Michael Bergin. Carolyn and Michael were in a relationship before she got married to John. However, when Michael claimed that their affair continued even after her marriage to JFK, it soon turned as a scandal. Michael, in his book, The Other Man: A Love Story, which was released in 2004, claimed that his love affair with Carolyn continued even after her marriage.
In his book, Michael wrote about various details of his affair with Carolyn. He alleged that although he and Carolyn dated in 1992, she reached out to him after less than a year of their wedding to JFK. He stated that Carolyn reached out to him after she believed her husband, John F Kennedy Jr., was cheating on her. Michael added that Carolyn had not contacted him to start an illicit affair but reached out to him as a friend.
JFK Jr. and Carolyn's relationship took a tragic end in 1999 when they met with a fatal plane crash. On April 28, 1999, he purchased a plane from Air Bound Aviation and travelled with his wife, Carolyn and sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette. Lauren was supposed to be dropped off at Martha’s Vineyard, and JFK, along with Carolyn, were supposed to attend his cousin’s wedding. But soon, the plane was reported missing after failing to arrive at Martha's Vineyard Airport.
Their bodies were discovered on July 21, 1999, from the Atlantic Ocean by Navy divers: Kennedy, who had been training to gain experience as a pilot, was found in the cockpit, and the others were strapped into their seats.
