It wasn't Jennifer's only controversy, but it was the biggest one. Years later, in 2026, she found herself at the center of another troublesome situation that led to a legal row.
Jennifer was sued by a couple in February 2026 over alleged sex trafficking comments. About seven months before Jennifer died by suicide, a woman named Darby Annunziata, her husband John, and their lash salon, Sugar Pie Lashes, sued the former Fox News producer. The details were revealed in the court docs obtained by TMZ. Darby and John filed a USD 1 million lawsuit against Jennifer Eckhart, and the latter reportedly fought the case in her final days until her demise.
According to the Florida couple's complaint, Jennifer Eckhart falsely linked them and their salon business to sex trafficking. The court documents stated that Jennifer allegedly walked into Darby and John's boutique and warned people not to do business with them, claiming that Darby "doesn't really support women at all, especially single hard-working mothers working sex trafficking." According to the couple, Jennifer's wording made it seem like they were involved in the illicit trafficking business.
After being hit with the USD 1 million defamation lawsuit, Jennifer broke her silence and shared her stance. She denied accusing anyone of illicit activities and clarified that her remarks about Darby were based on her alleged misconduct toward a former employee. Jennifer Eckhart said that she criticized Darby for firing an employee after ill behavior towards them. The Florida couple submitted a voice recording of Jennifer to support their claims.
Regarding the audio clip, Jennifer argued that her remarks were opinions and the recording of the conversation was cut off before she finished explaining herself. She alleged that the voice note was edited in a certain way to paint her in a negative light. Jennifer then asked the court to dismiss the defamation case, and her May 2026 filing said discovery was ongoing. Now, following her demise, the case's future seems uncertain. There's no report clarifying whether the lawsuit will continue after her passing.
Despite facing legal woes, Jennifer Eckhart continued to do her thing and teased working on some "exciting stuff" in her final Instagram post, which was shared on June 1, 2026. She shared a carousel of photos and videos from Florida, including nostalgic childhood photos and pictures of her cat. The former Fox associate seemed to be in good spirits when she wrote:
"Haven't posted since the last time gas was under USD 4. What a time to be alive. Glad to be sharing this weird little corner of the Internet again. Working on some exciting stuff that I can't wait to share with you all!"
