Eric Dane's passing at age 53 has left an endless void among his family, colleagues, friends, and millions of fans worldwide. As heartbreaking as it was to see the widely loved actor deteriorate after his diagnosis with ALS, the world was not ready to mourn Dane's passing so early. For Grey’s Anatomy fans, who believe Mark Sloan’s death was one of the most heartbreaking chapters of the medical drama, Dane’s demise feels like losing him all over again; only this time, it's painfully real.
However, none of the pain compares to what Dane's loving family must be feeling right now. His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has lost her best friend, and his daughters have lost their hero.
Eric Dane's powerful last words for his daughters
Eric Dane took his last breath on February 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, including his wife and two daughters. His family confirmed the news with PEOPLE with a statement. Hours later, Netflix released a 50-minute documentary on his life and the people who meant the world to him. In the confidential taping of Netflix's Famous Last Words with TV producer Brad Falchuk, meant to be released only after his death, Dane left a powerful and tear-jerking message to his loved ones, including an unedited message addressed to his daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.

Even though he fought with everything he had, somewhere, Dane silently knew that his days were limited, and He wanted to express everything on his heart while he still had the chance, before ALS took away his ability to speak. As he lay lifeless, the actor wanted Billie and Georgia to know four important lessons about life that his disease taught him. Dane said:
"First, live now. Right now. In the present. It’s hard, but I learned to do that. For years, I have been wandering around mentally and lost in my head for long chunks of time, wallowing and worrying in self-pity, shame, and doubt... No more. Out of pure survival, I am forced to stay in the present... The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown. So you have to live now. The present is all you have. Treasure it. Cherish every moment."
The main reason Dane wanted to do the interview was for his two daughters, to make sure that he could give them an experience that "they might not have been able to get in other opportunities," as Falchuk mentioned to PEOPLE. A romantic at heart, Dane wanted his daughters to know the philosophy of love. His second message goes like this:
"Second, fall in love. Not necessarily with a person, although I do recommend that as well. But fall in love with something... Find the thing that makes you want to get up in the morning, drives you through the entire day. I fell in love for the first time when I was about your age. I fell in love with acting. That love eventually got me through my darkest hours... My work doesn’t define me, but it excites me. Find something that excites you. Find your path, your purpose, your dream. Then go for it. Really go for it.

In his third message, Dane urged his daughters to "find your people" and choose friends wisely. Reflecting on his own friends who became his extended family in his final years, the Euphoria star emphasised the need to find people who will always show up, especially when life gets tough. When life hits, simply showing up for one another can make all the difference — and those are the friendships, he believed, worth holding onto for a lifetime. He said:
"My friends come to me, we eat together, watch a game, listen to music. They don’t do anything special, they just show up. That’s a big one. Just show up. And love your friends with everything you have. Hang onto them. They will entertain you, guide you, help you, support you, and some will save you."
In his final message, Dane shared a powerful reminder about resilience. He urged his daughters to fight with everything they have, no matter what life places in their path. Speaking candidly about his battle with ALS, he made it clear that while the disease may have been weakening his body, it would never break his spirit. For him, dignity mattered just as much as determination, refusal to surrender, and holding on to strength until the very end. "You can face hell with dignity. Fight, girls, and hold your heads high," Dane said. He concluded by saying:
“Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words.
Eric Dane lost his father at just seven years old, a loss he only fully understood after becoming a parent himself. He and Rebecca Gayheart married in 2004 and welcomed daughter Billie Beatrice in 2010, naming her after Eric’s late father. They had chosen the name Billie for their first child, boy or girl. In 2011, they welcomed their second daughter, Georgia, completing their family.
Though his life ended far too soon, Eric Dane’s final words ensure his love, strength, and spirit will live on, forever in the hearts of the two girls who meant the world to him.
