Hailed as the ‘Queen of Country’, Dolly was a popular American singer, songwriter, and actress. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has been honoured with eleven Grammy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award. But her 1973 hit song, Jolene was actually inspired by a true event from her own life.
Not many people know this, but the inspiration behind Dolly Parton’s hit song, Jolene was taken from her own life. Yes, the song, which has been covered many times by popular artists like Olivia Newton-John and Beyonce was a track inspired by a real woman, who flirted incessantly with Dolly's husband, Carl Dean.
The song details a woman who begs another woman to not take her man. The woman in question was a red-haired bank teller who flirted with Carl Dean during the early days of his marriage with Dolly. In 2008, Dolly told NPR about the same and said:
“She got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us — when I was saying, 'Hell, you're spending a lot of time at the bank. I don't believe we've got that kind of money.' So it's really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one."
Dolly and Dean had a chance encounter when they met for the first time while she was doing her laundry at the Wishy Washy laundromat. In a flirtatious manner, he told Dolly that she would get a sunburn in her revealing outfit. It was love at first sight for both of them. Dolly thought Carl to be a genuine man, while he was certain that he would marry her.
Soon they fell in love and got married in 1966 in a secret ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. In the same year of her marriage, Dolly got her big break with her first full-length album, Hello, I'm Dolly. Amid her many fans, Carl was her biggest cheerleader. But he never liked the limelight and stayed away from it.
Dolly Parton never shied away from opening up about how much she loved her husband, Carl Thomas Dean. During an interview with US Weekly, when asked about how she kept the romance alive between them after being together for so many years, she said, “You find little ways.” Giving an example, she added:
“Like last year on his birthday, I dressed up in my Playboy bunny suit, made him breakfast and [ran] around in that for a little while.”
After 58 years of marital bliss, Carl Dean bid adieu to the world on March 3, 2025, leaving behind a huge void in Dolly Parton’s life. Since then, Dolly has been on an emotional ride as she misses him dearly. Speaking about the same during an appearance on Today, Dolly said:
“Life without him has been a ‘big adjustment’. I’ll always miss him, of course, and always love him. He was a great partner to me.”
