After Netflix's 'The Crash', people have called out the recent documentary on Mackenzie Shirilla for missing out major details.
Netflix’s The Crash has renewed interest in one of the most gruelling murders of 2022. A 17-year-old Ohio native, Mackenzie Shirilla, is in the limelight after she crashed her car into a wall at 100mph and killed two passengers. One of them was her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and the other was their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.
Though Netflix’s new documentary, The Crash, has renewed people’s interest in Mackenzie Shirilla’s story, the documentary is said to have missed many important details. The Crash is not the only documentary to have been made about Shirilla’s case. There are two other documentaries made on the same and were praised for having ‘way more details’.
There were reports that Mackenzie had been on the same road a few days before the crash. A user on Reddit pointed out that Mackenzie’s presence on the same road led the prosecution to present it as her doing a dry run before the actual crash. The user also accuses Netflix of missing out on such a major detail in the documentary.
There is an episode of Mean Girl Murders on HBO that discusses Mackenzie Shirilla’s case. The episode reveals how she was obsessed with social media like TikTok and Instagram. The episode also focuses on unbiased interviews from people who are not Mackenzie’s friends. The episode portrays Mackenzie as a wannabe influencer. Mean Girl Murders also shows that, after leaving the hospital, Mackenzie went to a concert just a month later.
The episode also features a classmate of Mackenzie, who pointed out Mackenzie’s mean behaviour towards others. Her classmate, Jaina Maynard, revealed that she came close to physically fighting Mackenzie on multiple occasions due to her bullying nature. The episode also highlighted that the murder was a well-planned move from Mackenzie’s side.
Not just Mean Girl Murders, there is another detailed description of the case in an episode of Killer Cases titled Murder on Wheels, which is available on Hulu. Revealing how Mackenzie premeditated the whole crash, a Reddit user shared:
“Netflix didn’t cover what truly happened and how this psychopath killer had practiced driving on this road weeks before. Watch Killer Cases Season 4, Episode 12, Murder on Wheels on Hulu; and Mean Girl Murders Season 2, Episode 7 Under the Influence which is both on Hulu and on HBO Max. You’ll see how she had premeditated this!”
A 27-year-old woman named Mary Katherine Crowder, who served time with Mackenzie Shirilla at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, told the New York Post some shocking details about Mackenzie. She revealed that The Crash's subject thought of herself as the "queen bee of Mean Girls" Mary claimed that Mackenzie's emotional and remorseful portrayal in Netflix's The Crash was entirely inaccurate.
She pushed back against the recent documentary's narrative, alleging that the subject's behaviour behind bars was very different from what was shown on camera. According to Mary, Mackenzie was "always laughing, always smiling and happy," showing no signs of repentance for killing two people. She further claimed that Mackenzie lived a comfortable life inside the facility and even sold customised jewellery and shoes to other inmates. Mary also revealed that she was shocked to see the recent documentary about her former cellmate, Mackenzie Shirilla. Mary stated that her "jaw literally dropped, because her [Mackenzie's] demeanour and the way that she looked was nothing like the person I was in there with."
