He was the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra until his tragic death on January 28, 2026. For the unversed, he unexpectedly passed away in a plane crash near Baramati. For those who do not know, the veteran political leader, Ajit Pawar was travelling from Mumbai to his hometown, Baramati, on January 28, 2026, when his private charter flight unexpectedly crashed. The aircraft was trying to land at the Baramati airport; however, it went off the runway and crashed. The unfortunate incident claimed the lives of everyone on the board. An eyewitness recalled the tragic incident and shared:
"I saw it with my eyes. This is really painful. When the aircraft descended, it seemed it would crash, and it did crash. It then exploded. There was a massive explosion. We rushed here and saw that the aircraft was on fire. There were four to five explosions in the aircraft again. More people came here, and they tried to pull the people out. But since this was a huge fire, people could not help."
Ever since, the news of his tragic death has gone viral on social media, multiple leaders and celebrities have expressed their shock and grief. It is worth mentioning that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and President of India, Droupadi Murmu expressed their shock. Apart from them, celebrities like Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Anupam Kher, Sachin Tendulkar and more also mourned Ajit Pawar's sudden death.
According to a report by Free Press Journal, in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election affidavit, Ajit Pawar had declared his total net worth as Rs. 45.37 crore. Reportedly, his movable assets included fixed deposits, shares, bonds, silver articles, bank balance and some agricultural requirements.
According to the same report, Ajit Pawar had also declared two vehicles- Toyota Camry and Honda CR-V. On the other hand, his immovable assets included agricultural land, real estate holding and residential properties. If reports are to be believed, his immovable assets increased by nearly Rs. 10 crore between 2019 and 2024, which made him one of the richest political leaders of Maharashtra.
Ajit Pawar was one of the most influential political leaders from Maharashtra. Over the years, he held multiple positions. Coming to his personal life, Ajit Pawar was married to Sunetra Pawar. It is worth mentioning that Sunetra is the daughter of former Maharashtra minister, Padamsinh Bajirao Patil. She herself also became the Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. The couple had two sons, Parth and Jay Pawar.
A few minutes before the tragic plane crash, reportedly, Ajit Pawar had shared a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. He had shared a tribute to freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai. However, his post was soon deleted. The now-deleted could be read as:
"On this, his birth anniversary, humble salutations to the great freedom fighter, proclaimer of Swaraj, and ‘Punjab Kesari’ Lala Lajpat Rai Ji, who dedicated his all to the nation’s independence! His patriotism shall forever continue to inspire us."
