Following this, the couple was arrested in connection with Saylor's death and has recently waived their right to an attorney.
Five-year-old Saylor Hayes' parents, who were detained in connection with her death, were seen for the first time since the tragedy, on September 3, 2026. The accused, John Herb Hayes III and his wife, Geordyn Nichole Hayes were produced at a Tennessee court for their extradition hearings. However, according to a report by TMZ, both Saylor's mom and dad waived their rights to attorney hearings and other extradition proceedings.
The couple was arrested in Tennessee, but was supposed to be extradited back to South Carolina, where their daughter Saylor's lifeless body was found. However, since John and Geordyn have waived their extradition rights, they are scheduled to appear in Tennessee court for a status hearing on September 14, 2026. The scheduled appearance would be voided if the duo is released before then.
The charges against the parents of the late five-year-old autistic child include unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child. Both are being held without bond. Notably, it is not the first time John and Geordyn have faced child neglect allegations. They were embroiled in a series of such cases before their daughter, Saylor Hayes was found dead in the waterway in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
A report by Fit News revealed that Saylor Hayes' parents had faced multiple child abuse allegations in their home state of Virginia, as per the court documents they obtained. 70-year-old John Herb Hayes III and 31-year-old Geordyn Nichole Hayes previously had a child neglect case involving their two young children, who tested positive for controlled substances while they were with their parents.
One of the kids was identified as a two-year-old girl with initials S.H., matching Saylor Hayes' initials and age at that time. Now, after about three years, another child neglect case has been registered against them, following the untimely and unnatural demise of Saylor, who was five at the time of her passing. John and Geordyn Hayes are now accused of failing to protect their severely nonverbal, autistic child, Saylor.
Saylor Hayes went missing after allegedly having wandered away from her family's rental home in the Pawleys Island area of South Carolina on August 30, 2026. The Virginia couple and their two children were there on vacation. However, after being unable to locate Saylor for sometime, her parents reported her missing, calling emergency services on the same day.
During the emergency calls and initial search, John told dispatchers and deputies that Saylor was equipped with a Project Lifesaver tracking device. The parents asked the search teams to deploy radio-frequency tracking equipment to locate her. However, the investigating officers later discovered that the tracking transmitter had been removed and left in a vehicle at their home in Bristol, Virginia, before they left for vacation.
It was seen as John and Geordyn intentionally misdirecting search efforts away from a nearby waterbody, where they had left Saylor Hayes unsupervised. Tragically, on August 31, 2026, the nonverbal five-year-old's body was found in the same waterbody where she was last seen, leading to her parents being arrested.
