Passionate Portugal

Having a great honeymoon is very important, because as the old saying goes “morning shows the day”. So choosing the right location for your honeymoon is just as important as choosing the right man to marry. Portugal is one of the best places to spend your honeymoon.

One of the most beautiful and underrated countries in Europe, Portugal is a country that has something for everyone.

Gateway to Europe, Portugal combines natural beauty, medieval splendor, and sophisticated beach resorts. The landscape and climate of Portugal could not be lovelier. Portugal has the same charm as old world, faded, sepia photographs, with an unchanging rhythm of life that has been followed for centuries.

Try the cities by the sea for a cosmopolitan and captivating atmosphere as arresting as the atmosphere of Paris, London or Rome. Some of them, like Lisbon and Porto, are divided between the river and the ocean, which guarantees a particular delight. The nightlife of these cities, in particular, is noteworthy. In Buçaco or on the island of Madeira, you will find inspiration and romantic environments, alone with that special someone in the lap of nature. In fact, did you know that port wine was invented in Porto, Portugal? And the Portuguese city of Madeira gave birth to the eponymous liquor in the seventeenth century, which eventually mutated into the modern sherry.

If you prefer beaches, then you will find Algarve, Alentejo or Arrabida more to your taste. These beaches are a little off the beaten track, but they are most definitely worth your while. But the best thing about Portugal is its cuisine. Its proximity to the African continent has given birth to a unique Portuguese culture that contains influences of European, Moorish, Arabian and African culture.  And this cultural diversity is probably best reflected in its delicious cuisine.

If you have ever entertained the fantasy of spending your wedding night in a castle, you can indulge your fantasy here. Portugal has a number of pousadas-- architecturally and historically significant buildings such as former castles, monasteries, and fortresses -- that have been converted into extraordinary government run accommodations. And if you think that these pousadas are expensive, think again. Thanks to a favourable exchange rate, they are surprisingly affordable.

Fun things to do together on your honeymoon include hot air ballooning, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, and mountain biking. Couples can also enjoy water sports along the coast or go on a cruise on the canals and rivers that crisscross Portugal, or tour a winery.

Portugal can be quite expensive, but that does not mean you have to spend an arm and a leg to have a vacation here. Avoid visiting during the summer months since this is the main tourist season in Europe & this drives up the prices of just about everything. Instead, consider renting a vacation home to get an authentic Portuguese experience. This will allow you and your husband to spend quality time together (and spend a fraction of the price on lodging than if you were staying in a major hotel or resort).
