Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's relationship was loved by many. However, their separation in 2021 came as a shock as no one thought that they would part ways. The duo shares a similar interest, and Kiran's creative thoughts and a way of binding the family together were a cherry on the cake. While Kiran Rao is a renowned name in the film industry, she is known to the world as a superstar's wife despite their divorce.
Recently, in an interview with Zoom, Kiran revealed that she is still referred to as 'Aamir Khan's wife'. She revealed people still recognise her at the airport, and people come and ask her, 'You are Aamir Khan’s wife, right?' She added that people still associate her with him and she has become accustomed to it. Kiran further added that she now corrects them as 'ex-wife'. She was quoted as saying:
"Even now at the airport, people go like, ‘You are Aamir Khan’s wife, right?’ They might not even know my name but the association is direct with him and I have become accustomed to it. Though now I have to say ex-wife. It doesn’t bother me because I have always had my own interests, my own set of friends, and my own life, which I actively work at having. Anyone in marriage needs to have their space and identity."

Kiran Rao expressed how her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, sees her as his 'partner' in Aamir Khan's Productions. She was quoted as saying:
"Partnering with Aamir in Aamir Khan Productions (for Laapataa Ladies) has always been easy because he is very welcoming of opinions, he looks at me as a creative partner. It’s very heartening, because though everybody sees me as a wife or an ex-wife, if I didn’t have a very strong sense of self I would have been depressed by being reduced to just a wife. But, I have quite a laugh about it, honestly."
When Aamir Khan and his ex-wife, Kiran Rao graced the stage of News18 India Chaupal, they talked about working together after divorce. Aamir quipped whether a couple should immediately become enemies after separation. He also expressed his happiness on meeting Kiran and have a beautiful joureny together. He also added that they are always going to be a family. He said:
“Yeh kisi doctor ne kaha hai ke divorce ho jata hai toh aap foran dushman ho jaate hai? Yeh meri khushnaseebi hai ke mere zindagi mein Kiran aayi aur humara safar bahut hee fulfilling raha mere liye. Bahut kuch banaya humne saath mein, personally and professionally aur age bhi hum saath mein hee hai. Hum insaani aur jaazbaati taur pe jude huye hai aur humesha rahenge. We are like a family.”
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's love story started when they worked together in the film, Lagaan. Kiran worked as an assistant director, while Aamir was the lead in the iconic film. After a few years of dating, the couple tied the knot in 2005. After six years of marital bliss, the couple welcomed their first child via surrogacy in 2011. After eleven years of marital bliss, Aamir and Kiran announced their separation with a joint statement.
