Anita Dongre was born on October 3, 1963, in Mumbai in a middle-class family. Not much is known about her father, but as per multiple reports, Anita's mother, Pushpa Sawlani was into stitching, and it was from here that her daughter, Anita built an interest in the world of designing clothes.

It was back in 1995 when Anita Dongre rented out a 300-square-foot space with her sister, Meena Dongre, to start their own clothing business with just two sewing machines. The idea behind it was to create affordable and professional clothes to carry as workwear.

Back in that time, the officewear were quite expensive, and only some working women could afford such costly clothes. Hence, Anita Dongre and her sister, Meena, decided to cash on the opportunity by providing quality workwear at affordable prices.

Anita Dongre founded AND in 1995, which was followed by four major brands

Once, in an interview with a leading publication, Anita Dongre revealed that when she went to retailers and mall owners to lease some space, they rejected her by saying that she was not a recognised brand.

Those multiple rejections pumped Anita to build her own brand. As a result, in 1995, she founded AND, and its first store was established in Mumbai's Crossroads Mall. Soon, she started getting a lot of love from people, as her outfits were receiving a positive response from the audience.

Following the ongoing success of AND, Anita opened four different brands under its umbrella, Global Desi, House of Anita Dongre, Pink City Fine Jewellery, and Grassroot by Anita Dongre. While House of Anita Dongre is created to cater the brides, Pink City is dedicated to the traditional craftsmanship of jewellery, Global Desi is about the fusion of creativity and comfort in everyday clothes, and Grassroot by Anita Dongre is a collection of contemporary clothes.
