She was also one of the highest-paid stars in the industry. Zeenat's personal life had attracted a lot of public attention, and she opened up about her toxic marriage with Mazhar Khan.
Zeenat Aman stated that relationships are always more complicated than the version that eventually becomes gossip. What she can honestly say is that when she married Mazhar, she was ready to become a mother. And she has spoken openly about that. Zeenat stated that she believed marriage was the route to building a family, and she made her choice accordingly. Calling her marriage an eye-opener, Zeenat revealed:
"It taught me about the difference between love and self-abandonment. I personally stayed because I had made a commitment, because we had children, and because I had hoped that things would change.”
Zeenat then understood that she could not truly save someone at the expense of her own well-being. The actress revealed that she eventually understood she could not save another person by destroying herself. In her words:
"I have openly spoken about having fought many of his battles, but I eventually realised and recognised that he had to help himself. He is the father of my children, so I would not like to say anything derogatory about him."
Zeenat reflected on what heartbreak taught her and shared that success can instill confidence, but heartbreak teaches boundaries. It teaches one that being loved is not enough without respect. The actress mentioned that staying is not always the noble thing. Sometimes, leaving is an act of love for yourself and for the people who depend on you.
Zeenat Khan had a relationship with Sanjay Khan and has now looked back over her troubled marriage with Mazhar Khan. It has been decades since Zeenat came out of her toxic marriage. Now, she looks back at it with a lot of compassion.
Zeenat sat down for an interview with Between Us By Anamika and spoke about how her personal life has always taken the limelight over her professional career. She revealed that when she was young, she made choices about what she believed and what she wanted. In her words:
"Some choices served me, and some didn’t. Age gives you the luxury of looking back without needing to either defend yourself or punish yourself. Many women are taught to be accommodating. To interpret someone else’s behaviour generously and their own discomfort as an inconvenience. I wish I had understood earlier that discomfort is information.”
Zeenat, speaking about infidelity in Bollywood, said that it is not uniquely a Bollywood phenomenon. It is a human failing. What changes in the industry is that private relationships often become public entertainment. And she does not think anyone benefits from turning another person’s heartbreak into gossip. That’s the truth.
