Shakira recently set the stage on fire with her halftime performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Gerard Piqué, who announced his retirement from Spain in 2018, also marked his presence at the event after winning the World Cup three times.
People have since looked back on Shakira and Gerard's past relationship. They met in 2010, while making the song, Waka Waka. Following this, the duo fell in love. They have two children together; however, after 11 years of togetherness, it was in 2022 that the couple announced that they would part ways. While no particular reason for their breakup was ever revealed, Spanish media reports claimed that Shakira decided to part ways because she found out that Gerard was cheating on her.
While the singer or her ex-partner never opened up about the same, there had been a diss track that somewhat came out as an indirect confirmation of the buzz to Shakira's fans. In the diss track, Shakira said, 'You traded a Rolex for a Casio', and it turned out to be a massive hit. Now that Shakira and Gerard's relationship is being looked back on, people have been questioning what the reason was when Shakira didn't marry her ex-partner after 11 years of togetherness.
It was in 2020, when Shakira and Gerard were still together, that the singer was asked about the same. Speaking to 60 Minutes, sitting beside Gerard, Shakira revealed that marriages scare her.
Shakira further revealed that she didn't want her man to see her as a wife; rather, she wanted him to see her as a lover and girlfriend. Shakira further added that she wanted to keep him on his toes. Shakira wished for Gerard to believe that anything is possible depending on certain behaviour. Shakira could be quoted as saying:
“To tell you the truth, marriage scares the sh–t out of me. I don't want him to see me as the wife. I want him to see me as the lover, the girlfriend. I want to keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything’s possible depending on behavior.”
In several of her interviews, Shakira has spoken about staying a single mom. It was two years back in 2024, when speaking to Apple Music, Shakira revealed that when she was trying to be a partner, while parenting her and Gerard's two kids, she found that there was not the right kind of balance, as she wouldn't be able to work that freely, feeling guilty.
As Shakira is now in Miami and her kids are older, she can work how she likes. Although it's still tough given that her two sons depend on her and she is a single mom. Shakira said that she doesn't have a husband to help her with all of these things; however, she also added that it's kind of really good that she doesn't have a husband, as it was dragging her down.
Shakira further added that she started to make music, and she eventually felt that it was a compulsive need of hers, which she didn't realise before. Shakira could be quoted as saying:
"And I'm a single mother, I don't have a husband at home to help out with anything. In a way, it's kind of good not to have a husband because that…I don't know why it was dragging me down, man. Now I feel like working. I feel like writing songs. I feel like making music. It's a compulsive need of mine that I didn't feel before."
