Manoj was born on September 11, 1976, to legendary director, Bharathiraja in Theni, Tamil Nadu. He made his acting debut in the 1999 romantic film, Taj Mahal. The film was directed by his father, Bharathiraja. In his debut, Manoj shared screen space with Riya Sen, who was the female lead. He also starred in films including Kadal Pookkal, Alli Arjuna, Viruman, Maanaadu, Samudhiran, Varushamellam Vasantham, Eera Nilam, Annakodi, and Baby.
Besides being an actor, Manoj worked as an assistant director in films like Nadodi Thendral, Kizhakku Cheemayile, Bombay, and Enthiran. He made his directorial debut with the 2023 film, Margazhi Thingal. For those unaware, the film also stars Bharathiraja, Suseenthiran, Shyam Selvan and Rakshana. Coming to his personal life, Manoj was married to his longtime girlfriend, Nandana. Manoj and Nandana got married in November 2006. Following their wedding, the couple hosted a grand and star-studded reception in Chennai. The duo also shared screen space in the film, Saadhuriyan. The couple shared two daughters.
Manoj Bharathiraja passed away on March 25, 2026, due to cardiac arrest. At the time, Manoj was 48. According to multiple reports, Manoj had undergone a coronary artery bypass surgery a week before his untimely demise. Following the surgery, Manoj was recovering at his home. However, he had a cardiac arrest within days after the surgery. Manoj’s death was shocking and heartbreaking. Paying tribute to him, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, MK Stalin, offered his condolences to his family. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Stalin wrote:
"I was deeply pained to learn of the demise of actor and director Manoj Bharathi, who is also the son of director Bharathiraja. Manoj Bharathi, who got introduced through his dad’s film Taj Mahal, went on to create an identity for himself by consistently acting in a number of films such as Samuthiram, Alli Arjuna and Varushamellam Vasantham. He also attempted a number of things including direction. His unexpected demise at such a young age is shocking. I express my deepest condolences and consolation to director Bharathirajaa, Manoj’s family and friends in the film industry."
Actor-turned-politician, Khushbu Sundar, wrote on her X handle, "Extremely shocked to hear that Manoj is no longer with us. His untimely demise pains me. He was just 48 years old. May God give strength to his father, Thiru #Bharathiraaja, and his family to overcome this unbearable, painful loss. You will be missed, Manoj."
In a past interview with Cinema Vikatan, Manoj shared that his father believed that he had introduced him as an actor. The legendary director was afraid that if he did the same thing in direction, it would be difficult for him to handle. Manoj highlighted that for him, it was always about proving himself. He was quoted as saying:
"My father believed he had introduced me as an actor, but I did not achieve great fame. He was afraid that if the same happened in direction, it would be difficult for him to handle. But for me, it was always about proving myself independently. I wanted to make it on my own, and now I have done that."
Earlier, in an interview with Cinema Vikatan, Manoj recalled a dark phase of his life. Manoj shared that during that phase, he battled with acute depression due to his constant eight-year-long struggle in the film industry. Despite his efforts, Manoj faced constant rejections. Even his father’s legacy didn’t bring him opportunities, deepening his frustration. Manoj admitted that during that phase, he had suicidal thoughts. However, it was his wife, Nandana and two daughters who helped him to overcome these struggles.
