Ilhan Abdullahi Omar is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota. She is one of the most popular names in American political circles. Omar is the first Somali American in the United States Congress and the first woman of colour to represent Minnesota. Not just this, Omar is one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. Ilhan Omar got married to Tim Mynett in 2020. However, she was first married to Ahmed Hirsi at a very young age and shares three children with him. However, the duo got divorced in 2019, and the reason cited by her for the same was ‘irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship’. In 2020, Omar announced her marriage to Tim Mynett through her social media handle.
Just like Omar, her husband, Mynett, too, is a popular name in politics with over 15 years of career. After his graduation, Mynett started working as a political consultant for many firms. He also worked on Omar’s 2019-2020 reelection campaign and partnered with E Street Group. He helped with the fundraising consulting and various design services.
But when Omar announced her marriage to Mynett in 2020, the couple faced significant criticism from conservative groups. It was alleged that the duo used the campaign funds for their own benefit. After the backlash, Omar issued a statement on X, revealing that her relationship with Mynett began much later and that she sought legal advice to ensure it was legal before starting it.
Just like Omar, Mynett was also married previously to Beth from 2012 to 2019. However, in 2019, Beth filed for a divorce from Mynett and mentioned in court that his "devastating and shocking declaration of love" for Omar led to their split. The couple has a son, and when Beth filed for a divorce, Mynett quashed the allegations of an affair leading to his split. He also claimed that Beth's allegations were just part of the smear campaign.
As a coloured Congresswoman, Omar has faced significant backlash. The constant and aggressive political attacks and threats on them have not affected their ‘Zen-like’ calm relationship. She has often credited Mynett for his belief in her despite being constantly under public scrutiny. The couple has often been a target of their political opponents, but despite the constant trolling, the duo didn’t let anything affect their love and respect for each other.
In an interview with The Guardian, Mynett heaped praise on Omar for maintaining her grace under constant pressure. Mynett also revealed that he looks up to his wife as an inspiration. Speaking about the same, he said:
“For any human being in the universe to be targeted this way, I’ve never met one that could handle it better than my wife. A lot of times I think back to all of the trials and tribulations of her life – a child war refugee, there’s so much – but I don’t even think it’s that. I don’t think it’s her experience. I think it’s the core of who she is. She knows why she’s here and she’ll never be deterred by somebody doing racist, bigoted things towards her.”
