Shakira's ex, Gerard Piqu is currently back in the discussions as the Colombian singer made the world groove on 'Dai Dai'.
Pop icon, Shakira recently made history by performing at four separate FIFA World Cups. In her latest appearance, she served as the headliner for the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony, and the Colombian, as expected, didn't disappoint with her energetic act. She performed the official 2026 anthem, Dai Dai alongwith Burna Boy, thrilling the Estadio Azteca crowd. However, many felt that the 49-year-old's appearance seemed different from her usual self and that a body double might have replaced her. As she made headlines for her FIFA act and the alleged clone theory, her ex, Gerard Piqué made it back to the discussions. Let's check out his current whereabouts.
Gerard Piqué officially retired from international football in August 2018 after the World Cup in Russia. He hung up his boots and retired from professional football in November 2022 after ending his career with FC Barcelona. Thus, he is not part of Spain's 2026 FIFA World Cup roster. Gerard's last World Cup appearance was in 2018 in Russia. In that year, he started all four matches for his team before Russia eliminated them in the Round of 16. Although he is not part of the World Cup as a player, he is staying involved with the league by following it as a spectator and sharing his predictions and expert comments on the players, fixtures, etc.
As Shakira made the world groove to Dai Dai, her ex-boyfriend, Gerard Piqué stayed away from the spotlight. As per the latest reports on his whereabouts, he is currently in Spain and working as a prominent sports executive. He is the founder and president of the Kings League and is working on growing the league. The Kings League was founded in 2022 and has been marketed to begin sometime in 2026 in the United States. Regarding the awaited opening of the tournament, its CEO, Djamel Agaoua stated:
"We feel ready to attack the big animal, which is the US market. We start on the East Coast for operational reasons."
In 2010, when she was filming the iconic Waka Waka music video for the FIFA World Cup, she met Gerard Piqué, a charming FC Barcelona defender who immediately caught her attention. The singer admitted later that she wasn't even a soccer fan when she met Gerard, but seeing him restored her faith. She told Elle in 2013:
"I was becoming an agnostic… I was not feeling the love like it was supposed to be; I started to think that there was no God. And suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out."
After dating in secret for a while, Shakira and Gerard made their relationship official in 2011, posting a photo of the Barcelona defender hugging the singer from behind, accompanied by the caption "Les presento a mi sol" (I present to you my sun). Not long after this, the pair shared a kiss and embraced on the stage during the Barcelona stop of Shakira's The Sun Comes Out World Tour.
After 11 years together and two children, Shakira and Gerard announced their separation on June 4, 2022. The news followed reports from El Periodico that Piqué had been living apart from her and their children. In a September 2022 interview, Shakira called the aftermath of their breakup "the darkest hours of my life." But in the months that followed, the truth about the split was finally out.
In 2023, reports claimed that Piqué had cheated on Shakira multiple times, with the Spanish outlet, El Periodico claiming that the ex-footballer was seen with another woman. The speculations only intensified when, only seven months after the split, Gerard went Instagram-official with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti.
