Netflix’s Death of the Pastor's Wife has brought renewed attention to Mica’s life, her troubled marriage to pastor John-Paul "JP" Miller, and the questions that continue to surround the years leading up to her death, and the case that eventually led to the establishment of Mica's Law.
The three-part docuseries gives Mica’s parents, Michael Francis and Angelita Ramirez, along with her siblings Nate, Anna, Sierra, Abi and Destinee, a chance to share their experiences and speak about the woman they say they lost far too soon.
Mica, a worship leader and singer, was 18 when she married her first husband, Jeremy, and JP was married to his first wife, Alison Williams, at the time. According to the documentary's accounts, the pair began an affair in 2015, when they were both married to their respective spouses. After the marriages ended, Mica and JP tied the knot on November 7, 2017. Within years, their relationship would become deeply troubled.
Although Mica and JP’s marriage lasted several years, according to her family, friends, and accounts featured in Death of the Pastor’s Wife, the relationship eventually became increasingly difficult. Mica separated from JP and ultimately sought a divorce in 2024. In an affidavit accompanying her divorce filing, she described experiencing alleged emotional, sexual, spiritual, financial, and physical abuse.
Mica died in April 2024 at the age of 30. Her death was officially ruled a suicide. Her relationship with the 15-year-older pastor became a central part of her story. According to accounts featured in the Netflix documentary, Mica first met JP Miller through Solid Rock Church when she was a teenager. She eventually became a worship leader and worked closely with him.
In the months and years since, Mica's family has kept voicing concerns about her marriage to JP Miller, the pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. According to accounts featured in Death of the Pastor’s Wife, Mica’s relatives had concerns about the relationship for years. JP had been her pastor and mentor before their relationship became romantic.
The documentary features Mica’s siblings and friends as they recount what they say was a long pattern of emotional, spiritual and financial control. Mica herself had accused JP of abuse in a divorce affidavit shortly before her death. However, JP has denied allegations that he was responsible for Mica’s death and has not been charged in connection with it.
Of Mica’s five siblings, Nate, Anna, Sierra, Abi and Destinee have remained an important part of preserving her memory. The Francis family became deeply involved in telling Mica’s story after her death. Netflix’s documentary gave several family members the opportunity to discuss her life, her love of music and faith, and the struggles they say she faced behind closed doors.
For the family, the series is not simply about revisiting a tragedy. It is also about ensuring that Mica's own words, journals and experiences are not forgotten. Her brother Nate has been particularly outspoken about the impact of the federal case against JP, saying in the documentary that the charges filed against him represent only a fraction of what his sister allegedly endured.
Today, one of Mica's family's biggest priorities is advocating for stronger laws addressing coercive control. Following her death, her relatives supported legislation known as "Mica’s Law," which aims to recognize coercive control as a form of domestic abuse under South Carolina law. The legislation would address patterns of psychological, emotional, and financial abuse that may leave no visible physical injuries. While the legislation did not pass in the 2026 legislative session, advocates have carried the momentum forward to get it introduced again.
Mica Miller's family has made it clear that they want her name associated not only with tragedy but with meaningful change. They have also worked to honor her through WayMakers, a nonprofit organization created in her memory. The organization reflects what those closest to Mica say was her desire to help others, even during difficult periods in her own life.
While JP Miller hasn't been charged for Mica's death, legal trouble hasn't left his side. In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted the former pastor on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his federal trial is scheduled for October 2026.
More than two years after losing their daughter, Mica Miller's family has refused to back down; they continue to fight to make sure her voice is heard, even in death.
