It all started after she got a scolding from the judge in front of her peers and other defendants because she was wearing a sleeveless shift dress. While she took the discussion from the courtroom to the internet, Mariah further revealed that she received bizarre remarks from female lawyers.
Mariah's sleeveless dress became a topic of national concern after the discussion was taken from a Texas courtroom to the internet. Mariah shared her thoughts on X and how the judge behaved with her by calling her out in front of the bench to have a better look at her dress, and then laughing at her.
However, Medina said she was particularly surprised by the reactions she got from other women, and revealed that some female lawyers were the ones who made the mean remarks. Medina's friends supported her, but she revealed to The Post that female attorneys online were not so kind. Medina said:
"The number of women attorneys who are just so ugly on the internet, I was like, ‘this is so strange.' But I have thick skin."
Medina revealed that she received many hateful messages from women. They questioned her for posting her ordeal online, and many went on to claim that her dress was inappropriate. Mariah added that male lawyers also sent her strange messages, but she expected women to stand up with her. She pointed out how Texas rights end when it comes to bare arms, and said:
"Texas has the strongest right to bear arms, but when it comes to ‘bare arms,’ that right ends between the shoulder and the elbow, I guess."
Medina recalled the humiliating experience as the judge called her J.Crew dress a 'tank top', to which she replied that it was a shift dress. As per Medina, it was perfectly normal business attire. Medina recalled in the same interview that the judge inspected her outfit and asked her if it was appropriate. To which she said 'yes'.
Mariah also revealed that netizens kept slamming her for her fashion choice and bringing the matter online. They told her that the judge might not like her after this. However, in her defense, Mariah stated that she would wear a blazer when she sees the judge and insisted that she would never be intentionally disrespectful in court.
Mariah also added that her mentors once told her that she could be a lawyer who fights or the one who goes along to get along, and there are benefits to both. But you can't be both.
While Mariah happily exercised her right to speak and express her side of the story, the internet was left divided on the matter. Many lauded her for speaking up, but there were many who clearly stated that sleeveless in court was a big 'no-no'. One user added that the judge was "being petty", and it was out of line for her to publicly shame the lawyer.
Another sided with the judge and wrote, "If a judge says it’s inappropriate to wear in their courtroom. It’s inappropriate, end of discussion." A netizen wrote, "I read this story in the NY Post just moments ago. As a fellow trial attorney, I am shocked and disgusted that judges in the United States of America are asking women to dress as though they live in a Muslim country. What has happened to this once great country?"
